  • Short Winter Smoke ? 15

    Cigar: Ramon Allones Ramonitas
    Size: 121 mm x 26 ? Carolinas
    Smoke time: 38 mins

Cigar box age: EMS - Oct 2001. Source: http://www.mysmokingshop.co.uk

Note: Discontinued 2002 but still reasonably available in the UK.

First appearance: Slim and perfectly proportioned. Smooth earth brown wrapper with a very pronounced and evenly spaced spiral and neatly applied triple cap ? testament to the high skill factor required to roll small guage vitola. Older style embossed Standard ?C? band.

Construction: Well filled with a nice 'pinch' at the band, although feeling along the barrel I did detect a worrying knot at the front end, causing the pre-light draw as I expected, to be quite tight. The smoking draw over the first few inches was also tight, but with a little coaxing loosened as the smoke progressed. The burn, (see pics.) was absolutely die square and the ash solidly compacted throughout the smoke. Three tap offs. No re-lights. No corrections.

Flavour: Pre-light aroma. Fresh tobacco. The opening flavours from the Ramonitas are delicious with a heavy hit of fresh, bitter-sweet lemon zest over light wood. The smoke, though not voluminous had a soft mellow character and carried a woody aroma. At two thirds the sweet Cuban twang was still predominant while the wood flavour became honeyed and dryer with an almost ?Sugar Puffs like quality and some mild spice notes were also detectable. In the final third the wood flavours deepened and became fuller and richer but never to the point of dominating the underlying sweetness. Fabulous smoke.

Overall: The RA Ramonitas (along with the Punch Margaritas http://www.ukcigarforums.com/showthread.php?t=7634 ) is one of my favourite cigars. When they smoke well, they?re a joy. The flavours complexity and intensity is all there and the harmony in the way the flavours evolve and support each other is brilliant. A perfect lazy morning, coffee break or afternoon smoke.

Note: Perhaps expensive for the size, and maybe NOT for Newbees as some slowing and adjustment in smoking style may be needed to get the best from them.
