Oliva Serie V Double Robusto

Appearance: Smooth chocolate brown, dark rosado coloured wrapper with an almost marble appearance in the pattern of the fine veins. Perfectly cylindrical, neatly applied triple cap. Great looking cigar.
Construction: Feeling along the cigar, which I must say felt luxuriously heavy and beautifully balanced in-the-hand, the Serie V was rolled evenly and yieldingly for two thirds, however there was a distinct hard spot running from the band to the cap. The pre-light draw was tight. The smoking draw, although manageable was tight and to my mind marred the enjoyment of the smoke considerably. The burn was good (and sunrisingly slow), and the grey speckled ash was compact and solid. Three tap offs. One correction. No re-lights.
Flavour: The pre-light aroma was Earth, cocoa powder and musky tobacco. Lighting up, the first flavours are of rich sweet tobacco, floral/orange liqueur hints, and creamy coffee. The initial flavours were very pronounced, however they quickly settled down into a more medium flavoured profile of Americano coffee, leather and sweet earth. Through most the first third the rich coffee was very much the base flavour and was accompanied by pleasant (sweet) woody flavors and hints of chocolate and citrus. Towards the end of the first third the coffee flavour took a back-seat with woods, chocolate, leather and dry earth coming to the fore. In the second-third, chocolate and sweet wood flavours prevailed. This section, whilst pleasant and mellow stayed flavour consistent and pretty much unchanging. In the final-third was a bit of a let-down, caused mainly by the tightness of the draw. Medium and extremely smooth, the flavor was lead by coffee and leather, with hints of light spice detectable over a sweetness that might have given the cigar a great finale, however the draw problem had begun to pull tars into the smoke and I called it a day.
Overall: I thought the Oliva Serie V DR had the flavours, balance and potential to be an excellent cigar, but in this instance the normally good NC construction control was having a day off.
Note: Newbees beware, this cigar possesses quite a hefty nicotine kick in the last third.
