  • partagas 898v

    evening all,
just wanted to quickly share my thoughts on the partagas 898v!!! bear in mind, this isn't an in depth review....... personally, i don't think it needs one!!! i think it's achieved legendary status already, so i'm kinda just adding to the 'mystique' that already exists, lol!!!

to be honest, this choice was a last minute one, i had a montecristo no.2 lined up, but changed my mind at the last minute!!! knowing i was gonna be finished work at a sensible time this evening, i was gonna have me a 'proper' cigar this evening, as opposed to the usual 'small' selection (usually party short, boli CJ or PC, trini reyes or cohiba secretos)!!! like i said, i decided upon the 898v at the last minute......

this cigar was PERFECT in everyway!!! perfect construction, perfect burn, perfect flavour!!! the usual partagas flavours were there in abundance...... sweet espresso, cocoa, spice, but with the added bonus of more pronounced flavours of madeira, cinnamon and nutmeg!!! the flavours ebbed and flowed, none taking dominance over the others, which kept the cigar interesting and full of 'complexity'!!! all in all, it lasted around 1hr 20 mins......

    PARTAGAS 898V (ERO DIC 09)
    appearance (out of 15): 14
smoking characteristics (out of 25): 24
    flavour (out of 25): 24
overall impression (out of 35): 33
    total (out of 100): 95

a legend of a cuban cigar IMO, and smoking fantastic for such a young cigar!!! this classic needs no introduction or justification!!! a 'proper', classic, cuban cigar!!!

    all the best,

    alex

PS:as an extra note, i paired this cigar up with a bottle of tesco's argentina fairtrade malbec reserve 2009 (?6.50 a bottle)!!! the local paper (irish news) spoke highly of this yesterday:
"dense with black fruit and layers of plummy jam, a cigar element and soft tannins, this red cries out for a big, juicy steak"
good enough for me i thought, paired up perfectly with the partagas 898v!!!

This thread has got me going on this cigar now...!

anyone have knowledge of particularly good years for these; I really want to get hold of some aged ones.

In fact, I'm going to post in the "wanted section"

About a year ago I bought a single 8-9-8 from Choice Select in York, if my memory serves it was a 1998 aged, complete impulse buy mainly because it looked as near perfect as could be, the wrapper was flawless and it didn't disappoint.

                  Nice review

Great little review, thanks Alex. Sounds like it was everything a cigar should be. Must try one of these this week.

                        Hi Will,
try the 898 unvarnished, not quite so "in your face" & more consistant, cheaper too!

Harder to find though! The unvarnished are a 42 ring and slightly shorter than the 898V's, aren't they? Odd they were discontinued...
