  • Possible return to the Mother Land!

Sooo, I was watching some videos of cigar factory tours on youtube over the weekend when my wife asks me 'what are you watching?', so I show her and she does her typical rolling of the eyes, adding in a tut for good measure when she clocked it was cigar related... again!

Anyway, for our Honeymoon last October we visited Cuba. She wanted somewhere hot with nice beaches etc, but was not fussed exactly where, so I suggested Cuba as it had something for me there too (i'm not generally a fan of laying on a beach for a week solid!). She agreed, we went, had a fantastic time. We stayed 3 Days at the Parque Central, Havana, then trotted off to Varadero for 7 Days. The three days in Havana was my highlight by far and surprisingly enough, the wife said the same thing! Varadero was nice but to be fair we could have been anywhere in the world that has nice beaches and hot weather!

So, when she asked me what I was watching on youtube, I thought I might just put the suggestion out there that we maybe, sometime, go back to Cuba? And maybe spend a little more time in Havana? And maybe go around the time of the Cigar Festival?

The following 'yeah why not' nearly knocked me off my feet (I say nearly as I was sat firmly on my arse at the time!).

When we were in Havana in October, we had a day trip to the Vinales Valeys and stopped off at the Francisco Donatien cigar factory. This was great and exactly what I wanted, but it left me wanting to see more and more but we ran out of time in the capital. I plan on making much more of a second trip and will be tapping up you guys who have been before for some hints as how to get everything out of Havana!

As some of you know from some of my previous posts, the wife is expecting our first child next March, so It might not be for a while yet, it's just nice to know that the trip is on the cards!

        I am very jealous MrMad.

My fiancee also wants to go to Cuba (we have a "go everywhere in the world we can" policy) but only Cuba (Havana especially and the Hotel Nacional) are my little slices of heaven. Sitting in that courtyard with a Siglo IV and enjoying some beautiful dark rum with humid climate is just lifes way of telling you that life is good

        You're a b****rd (jealous) and have fun

I sure will do Butternut! Like I say it's probably not going to be very soon, I would guess Feb 2016 (without checking, I believe the festival is around then?!)

Mmmm, I think the Nacional might be on the cards this time... Although the Parque Central was spectacular and the humidor was beautiful! They do a peppermint coffee, they call the 'smokers coffee' which was stunning. Unfortunately I only discovered it on the last day we were there, while waiting for our transfer! Doh! I would hit them bad boys hard if we go back there!

Every Feb. Monday, Wednesday, Friday events. ~500 CUC/ event.

Go during the November festival. Less distributors. More BotLs. Cheaper, too.

Hmmmm, May try and persuade OH for the November one!

Parque Central has always looked amazing whenever I passed it. But the Nacional is special to me!

Definitely worth a trip inside, even if you're not staying there!

I just found this interesting little read and I've been to the shop mentioned in the last line. Definitely one to avoid and easily identified by its gated entrance to keep out the fake sellers. The shop is more like a bazaar and is aimed at tourists visiting La Habana for the day

You walk through the wide doorway with the tropical heat following you inside, and step onto a cracked marble floor, wondering just how many shoes have walked this weathered path before you. The clamor of workers going about their business reaches your ears and grows in volume with every step: A shout in rapid-fire Cuban Spanish, a call to an amigo, a friendly laugh, the hearty baritone of a golden-throated lector reading the daily news. Busts of José Martí stand atop pedestals and photographs of Fidel Castro and Che Guevara cover the walls. This is a Cuban cigar factory, a living, breathing thing that comes to life each workday. | Cigar Aficionado
