  • Purchases in Europe now limited to 50 Cigars

    Can this be true?.

    From cigars-connect.com

The Lobby Bar is an exceptional smoking lounge located in the Victoria Hall hotel, in the centre of Lyons. In the serene atmosphere of a private club, whose walls are covered by an immense bookshelf, you can enjoy your cigar from the comfortable position of a leather armchair. They also have an intelligent selection of luxury cigars and alcohols. Club ...

    Translation:

Purchases in Europe now limited to 50 cigars
In the name of "public health" and "support for tobacconists", MEPs lower the purchasing thresholds in neighboring countries for all types of tobacco.
The National Assembly passed an amendment this Wednesday, July 8, in favor of a reduction in authorized tobacco purchases in the countries of the European Union (and Andorra).

The new regulation amends article 575 I of the General Tax Code. It is included in the second amending finance bill 2020 and now sets the threshold above which the purchase is considered not for personal consumption at 50 cigars (instead of 200).

The Minister of Public Accounts Olivier Dussopt put forward "an objective of public health" and "support for tobacconists". It is also, he says, about "combating contraband tobacco."

In the explanatory memorandum, the text recalls the price differences between France and its neighbors on tobacco products: + 65% with Andorra, + 50% with Spain, + 45% with Luxembourg, + 35% with Germany and Belgium.

The cross-border purchasing thresholds are lowered for all categories of tobacco: cigarillos (100 instead of 400), cigarettes (1 cartridge instead of 2), roll-your-own tobacco, etc.

I can't seem to find any other mention of this online, hoping it's just fear mongering.

        Anyone seen any other sources?

Yeah it wouldn't surprise me, though we'll be 50 cigars regardless of the source soon enough anyway

I thought this would happen. I can imagine this hobby will be out of reach for some in a few years, with the aim to stop people smoking I suppose.

Means also we'll have to start dragging non cigar smoking friends around. Which makes no sense! Or move to Spain or Andorra we leave the continent? Or move to <cigar producing nation of your choice> for that matter!!

Thinking this post-apocalyptic-covid world .. I only need a computer and decent internet connection to work ... I have a lot of options now...

If the UK cigar market wasn't ruled by a greedy monopoly cigars could be far cheaper here and we wouldn't need a European trip to stock up.

I wouldn't be surprised if vendors suggested making multiple transactions - they wouldn't like to think they're losing 100's of euros in sales to a competitor down the street, would they?
Be hard to detect with cash transactions too.

I don't see it as too much of a problem tbh, still 4 boxes of cigars each trip abroad I take with my good lady.

                            For those interested

                            https://www.gov.uk/government/public...cco-duty-rates

We're one of the few Euro nations that tax based on weight instead of number of cigars (which basically means total package weight.) Almost 300£/kg of duty alone now (up from 270£/kg in 2017)

                            So 296£ a box of CoRo 219.5g = 65£ duty

                            h&f price + £65 + store markup + 121.66 VAT = 729.99

so i think 186.66£ is tax and duty?

£543.33 is the H&F + store gross price?

Well, it was you guys who invited the oligarchs, the Nigerian oil heirs, Omani horse lords and Brunei princes to come on over. These guys pay whatever for what they want and help to subsidise H&F. Guaranteed 🤣🤣
