  • Dominican Republic

Off to the Dominican Republic in a few weeks.
Seems there are a few factory tours available. La Aurora, LFD being ones I'd probably opt for. Can't see one for Davidoff unfortunately.
Anyone have any recommendations on places to pick up some cigars?
I've found this place online which has a store but any other recommendations would be gratefully received : https://cigarcountry.com/

Whereabouts in the Dominican? If you are going to Punta Cana you're going to be a long way from the factories. Duty Free was pretty good and had a separate section for Arturo Fuente and Opus X when I was there a few years ago. Cubans were still expensive and expect to pay US prices for NCs unless you buy local cigars which were pretty good actually. Lots of fakes available from the official vendors on the beach.

Cheers Peejay - yep, it's Punta Cana. I think it's a couple of hours from the hotel to the factories.
      thanks for the info!

Apologies - not sure if you've had your trip yet.
There were some tours available, if I remember correctly (Fuente), but they were about 3/4 hours drive from where we were - you had to make your own way and the taxi cost made it unviable.
I once convinced the GF to take a trip to Pinar Del Rio with me from Jibacoa (east of Havana). $300 taxi fare and 12 hours later she wasn't amused. When I mentioned a similar trip when we were in the Dominican I was told I could go by myself

Hi Rob, yes I am back. I didn't go as it was quite difficult logistically and I had my family with me. Would be a different story if on my own.

We took the bus, for a 10% of the cost but perhaps not possible or reliable enough today, with the fuel shortages.

Recently went back to the Dominican (our planned trip to Cuba was cancelled due to acute jet fuel problems).
If you're in / around Punta Cana I can really recommend a trip to Country Cigars.
We did the VegaFina tour - they roll the 1998s in-store. It's $20 per person (it's really short) but I didn't realise you get that money back as a store credit if you then buy in store.
Also have a lovely bar area and some really nice rums - the 25 year old Punta Cana XOX was super smooth with a Vega Fina 1998. First one I've had but it was a really nice cigar which I found gave a 'cool' sensation as I smoked it.
The 'face' hanging behind the bar is made from tobacco leaves.

Visited this one back in January, good experience. Bar wasn't working there but they delivered coffee and water also couldn't smoke inside at the time.
