  • Fake Esplindidos or "You like Cigars, don't you?"

    We all know the story so I will paraphrase;
Friend – You like cigars don’t you
    Me – Their fake
Friend – no, no their real
Me – tell me about them
Friend – A guy at work gets them from Cuba so their real
    Me – Their fake
Friend – no, no their real. We get loads of them, give them to clients, smoke them at company events, their 100% real
    Me – Their fake
Friend – NO, THEY ARE NOT
Me – Tell me about them, what are they, what is the contact, how much
Friend - Cohiba “esplindidos” and “Robustos” I think…
    Me – Their fake
Friend – “Vegas Ribeana” and “Trinidad” I think
    Me – That’s interesting, what’s the deal?
Friend – As you know we work in comidities trading, we do a lot of business with Cuba and our guy there sends us anything we want for ?150 a box…
    Me – Their fake
    Friend - they are not
Me – explains about the world of fake cigars, the cost in Cuba, diplomatic gifts, official receipts, factory structures etc
Friend – Do you want some, it is just a punt on ?150
Me – I will look at a box but I won’t take a punt as tome they are 99% fake (being generous) so the odds are against me ever spending ?150
Friend – You can’t look as they are sealed, they guy says take it or leave it
Me – they are fake, no one would ever have a real problem with a broken seal
Friend – I tell you what, I am getting a box Esplendidos (he likes cigars as well) for my Cousin, you can look at them and see they are real
Me – OK, but be prepared to be disappointed. BTW if they are real I will take 10 boxes

…………yada yada yada, you get the picture.

Many thanks to Jean at JJ Fox for allowing me to photograph their (real) Esplindidos for reference.

Real box on the right (if it is not obvious).

I'm not sure that all the fake Esplendidos are as dark as the examples shown alongside the obviously lighter ones. I have certainly seen light coloured fakes. My check list has always started with the 'green' seal - the darker and more distinct the printing the better. The bands, of course and the positioning of the label on the inside of the lid. As Cohibas are my favourites I suppose taste is the final test. It is obviously tougher to distinguish between good and fake RyJs because of the inconsistent quality, especially in recent years and I suspect it is the same with other factories. At least with Cohibas there is a consistency of quality and yardsticks are easier to formulate. Over the years I have smoked many fakes - Ramon Allones, RyJs, Bolivar and once Cohiba Robustos. The Cohibas were by far the easiest to identify as fakes simply by the taste.

As a postscript, has anyone ever encountered Cohiba fakes boxed as EMS ?

I wouldn't focus on the colour with these, these were photographed in different locations, and there are, of course, a wide range of shades possible (although should always be matched per box).

Main reasons why these are fake.

            1. Provenance
            2. No cardboard outer
            3. Warranty seal poor and wrong location
            4. Box not quite correct
            5. Embossing wrong
            6. Hinges wrong
            7. labels inconsistent
            8. Date stamp wrong
            9. Inner card wrong
10 Main inner label wrong, and wrong position

Personally how they taste is irrelevant in this case. I wouldn't go by 'darkness of warranty seal' as I have seen a lot ov varition over the years on legitimate stock. There is no doubt that it is not as 'crisp' and the hologram is poor as well.

No. But you'ld need to be pushing a load of boxes to want to do it .... and a UK base to do it from .... much easier to leave it of and pretend Fidel rolled an' boxed 'em!

How right you are - very ominous !

Let me throw the cat in among the pigeons ! With Cubans (particularly Cohibas) being so expensive, is there any wonder that fakes prosper ? We can all sit upon our high horses and spout this and that but, if EMS boxed Cohibas can be fakes, how does the average cigar buyer know what he (or she) is
buying ? We don't all shop at J J Fox or Davidoff. I feel very lucky with my source of over 25 years but I cringe at spending ?1000.00 on a box of 25 Esplendidos or ?500.00 on a box of Robustos and I know that I take a risk buying from a Cuban intermediary.

Trust in your source is the only reliable way! The average buyer will have to take his chances at UK prices....
