  • advice on a cigar purchase

Hi, a friend of my girlfriend's has just offered up 2 boxes of 25 Siglo VIs for ?200 per box. Her boyfriend is Cuban and his mum works at Cohiba, so apparently these cigars left the factory very recently. I'll try to post a picture of the box but is this too good a deal to be real? - anything that I can ask to check these are good?

Thanks in advance for any advice on this one.

Just read the 10 assumptions on fake cigars list... I suspect this ticks at least a couple of those..!

      At least.

If it seems too good to be true, then it probably is.

Try to get photographs of the underside of the box, the cigars themselves, close up shots of the bands, photos of
the paperwork and the insides of the box. You can then make a more educated decision.
You can ask all the questions you want, but you will be fed all the 'correct' answers.

Any way you look at it, your taking a risk. Is that amount of money worth a risk to you?

Thanks Johnny, appreciate the tips. It's a bit of an awkward one as the girl is an old friend of my girlfriend, she (my gf) doesn't really want to make a fuss and basically be checking that they're real... so it's buy on the basis of that photo or walk away. I suspect the latter is the obvious advice. It occurred that this might be genuine as the friend lives in Finland so can't imagine it's easy to sell cigars there... I'm probably better to just put the money toward a purchase I know is real.

That was my thought process - I could afford to lose €200 (though obviously wouldn't want to!), so thought it might be worth a punt and either have a great deal on some genuine cigars or lose €200 which isn't too bad.

€8 each, they might not be Cohibas but they might be smokable cigars, interesting quandary head_scratch2.jpeg
Tommy bought some that he knew to be fake and they were a damned good smoke.

Hadn't thought of it like that. I'd assumed they were either good or for the bin...

My first box bought in Jamaica were fake cohibas.... In the main they were alright. Binned a few due to obvious rock hard spots, and clear over loose sections. Opened a few up as i was curious. Some were proper long filler, some where more scrappy. I have half a dozen left i keep in my NC humi to help buffer humidity.

I fell foul of the box i saw vs the box i bought.... As i knew no better then! If you are looking for siglo VI's buy them where you know you are getting siglo VI's.... If you are after reasonably priced smokes.... And you have the cash spare, why not take a punt.

but as the guys have already said, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is...

These are either fake or the best case scenario black market, I wouldn't touch the personally

It is the oldest story in cigars...... And human nature to want it to be true.
