All a matter of the time available and my mood. I wouldn't say that I preferred one or the other.

Fat Cigar or smaller ones.

My mum recently sent me a care package from Spain which consisted of six RYJ No. 3s which will be the smallest cigar I've smoked (once I've let them bunk awhile in my humidor). I normally prefer No. 1s and at first I was a little confused by the No. 3 but it's a cute little bugger and I'm looking forward to puffing a few over the Christmas season.

Fat if I have the time and opportunity. Otherwise, I tend to wait for that moment to arrive.

I do like my longer cigars... but finding time to enjoy it rather than rushing it seems to always be a problem.
My favourites shorts
Boli 3
RASCC
San Cristobal EL Principe
After the a recent COTM I agree the Partagas Short is up there too

Prefer smaller sticks myself, mainly due to time constraints

Definitely! Party Shorts have been mentioned but I'll throw San Cristobal El Principe and Trinidad Reyes in there. Perfect outdoor autumn/winter smokes.

Fat Cigar or smaller ones.
For me it was a couple of 'larger' smokes that got me into cigars, one of which is still a top fave ( HDM Roi espec) altho granted only a 50 rg, I then discovered PC's / Mareva's offered better value in terms of units per box when I only could grab 50mins to an hour for a smoke anyway. After doing a spate of sampling I discovered a lot of variation in the small stuff. Then again cost driven I found the HDM PR, larger rg than the PC's which for me offered a more relaxed smoke albeit of similar time scales- this made me look at larger girth cigars in a different way and as such I know have a varied collection according to time available and strength etc eg if I want strong but quick it's a boli PC, if I want relaxed but light it's HDM Epi esp.
But so far I've struggled to get along with anything bigger than a sublime

I think I might be size agnostic. There are lovely smokes that are small (and concur with the Rev on puritos and minis, though definitely prefer monte or even Cohiba minis/clubs over RyJ), like the lovely RG Perla or the HUHC. There are also some larger gems (I'm partial to a Vegueros Entretiempos, not too pricey, very pleasant), though I don't think I could smoke a 60rg regularly without jaw trouble.
The thing I like about a stick around the 50rg mark is flexibility - punch, V cut, regular chop. All are possible. If it's anything longer than about 4in, it really demands you make time, and that means you can have a coffee, a whisky, both. Then the smoke is about the smoke and the sensory experience.
Then again, sometimes you have time to tease a Perla to its glorious end. Sometimes you're in a doorway and a mini or a club or a purito is a little slice of Cuban sunshine, and that's a good thing.

The Partagas minis are a pretty good ten minute smoke and come in a handy metal tin.

Go Small!
Thanks for the shout-out
CJ121, but I think your comments apply more to don TJ and his cohorts, rather than me. As most know, I only recently joined on the UKCF, at the behest of don TJ, posting under his ancient account. I guess you could say I'm a "
knewbee, " as don TJ used to call new members.
Now, having said that, I do have some thoughts on smaller, shorter cigars. One of my favorite "short" cigars is the Partagas Short. Never let's me down and can be enjoyed in less than an hour. The other very short smoke I enjoy is the Cohiba Club (not the mini). An excellent choice when time is limited or you simply don't want to smoke a larger cigar. It doesn't deliver the fullness of your finest cigars, but it privides just enough cigar-flavor punch to satisfy.

In my case pipe is not shorter smoke at all
.
Tried few minis, but they were not for me. Anything simillar to RASCC, JLP PC, Monte no 5 or even Novillo Fuerte Maduro is good enough for me, size wise. Mainly because too often I don't have time to smoke anything bigger and don't really like to rush it or do something while having a cigar.

Hey guys
I can certainly see your point with the Small cigars of a modest ring gauge but the true mini's I've had have always been at best slightly better than nothing. If a short smoke is required I tend to choose a pipe now .

I'm with you Rev on the smaller cigar front. I love a PC and tr?s PC personally. They more often fit the bill, in terms of available time and certainly from a flavour perspective. However, as we have seen over recent years, Habanos have steered towards larger formats and even some pseudo jaw breakers.
I'll admit that I don't explore the minis much, but ol @TJCoro used to regularly burn off the Bolivar Bonitas and I seem to remember he likes a Cohiba mini too. Perhaps he'll chip in at some point.

Fat Cigar or smaller ones.
I think back to when I first started smoking cigars and how obsessed I was with trying a really thick fat cigar (like the one you see in films or at the time like those featured in Boston Legal man I loved that show and not just because they ended every day with whisky and cigars.)
But I think it is something we can all relate to, at least for me when we first start we want to try every thick cigar we can, my first was a Don Ramos Churchill and it was rank (firstly that cigar tends to be hit and miss, and secondly I did not have a developed enough taste for cigars) I then slowly began seeking out smaller cigars.
From you H.Upman Junior Corona's, Petit Robusto, RYJ Various and I began to over time develop a real appreciation for those smaller Cigars and that if you just took the time to enjoy the cigar it wasn't so much the smoking but the experience that just so happened to involve smoking that created this relaxing experience full of these wonderfully subtle flavours.
Even going so far to the Purito range Monte's being a wonderful little smoke not over complex but still a cigar to enjoy when a hug amount of time isnt available but still delivering that cigar experience, In fact I have recently just bought a pack of RYJ Puritos to try while at a family meal I have always had a soft spot for the RYJ range and I am looking forward to it, especially as I have had them in the humidor for the better part of a week.
But sadly it does seem the smaller Cigars are disappearing and its a shame because I would like to see a nice balance between a Large cigar and small ones. Because after all I do enjoy a big cigar but I also enjoy those on the smaller side quite a bit, and I simply cannot stand some of the smaller store cigars Henri Wintermans Half Corona (it what I imagine smoking a lemon would taste like bitter or better still what smoking an ex might be like very bitter)
But I just thought I'd give some love to the smaller cigars now who's with me?Tags: None
