Mild / Medium - Taking the next step

Whilst this is a very subjective topic what can you guys recommend to throw in the humidor for a year that are the next step up from the mild / medium cigars I’ve been smoking of late please?

I still class myself as a newbie / beginner and particularly like pretty much everything by HdeM, HUHC, Magnums and QDO50.

I’ve tried a RYJ Short Churchill and a few MC’s but I'm
just not there yet. I’d like to think that in 12/18-months time I’ll have developed a palette to appreciate a fuller smoke and it makes sense to buy now and age at home.

I really like the feel of a 50+ ring gauge and preference is not an RE or LE.

I’m thinking RASS, Siglo 6 and Series D no5.

I'd recommend to try some Dominican cigars as well. Outside Cuba there's a whole New world of flavour to be discovered and Dominican tobacco is generally on the milder side.

Gav, I wouldn't describe the Sig VI as Med! Of course try by all means but I'd suggest trying the Sig II first & work up from there. If you want to lay down some RASS, you'll enjoy them one day & the longer they age, the better but it's still a jump up from a Monte. 12/18months seems quite a short time to change your palate so much. By all means get some stock in to age & try as you go but I wouldn't try to force it.
Once you're comfortable with Monte's then try VR, they are a richer flav but not stronger. Maybe SC as well. R&J are middle of the road, although the Short & Wide Churchill's are probably stronger than most of the marca, there's still plenty to try, the Anjedos Piramide is a good step into that format.

Keep us abreast of how it's going, like smoking your cigar, take your time & see how things develop.

Good ideas for CCs above, for NCs some premiums are good to age for a year or so like Padron 26s or 64s and Fuente Don Carlos's and Anejos. If you want to try an Opus X they need a year so best to buy now for next summer.

Only realised this was in the CC forum. But generally, I would recommend to try as many different cigars as you can to train your pallet. Do it consciously, especially with NCs. Meaning, be aware what tobacco was used and if possible what age the cigars have. This will allow you to spot specific flavour profiles in future. I took a lot of tasting notes when I started which really made me focus more on what I tasted.

And with Cuban cigars, don't give up on a brand or vitola if you don't like it. It might just have needed more time or be from a bad box. You never know.

So they say, but has never kicked my ass like some others have. Caveat the 3 or 4 I had were 20 years old.....

And an Esmeralda, well that goes from mild right through to strong. I need a sit down before I rode home after that. But I think it's down to the sheer volume of tobacco as well as the increasing strength of the blend. Phew!

But I did think you were asking where to go after mild/medium.

I have looked at some New Worlds there just seams to be so many of them. I’ve tried a few recently and enjoyed them, pricing in the UK isn’t very attractive though and for not much more you can get CC’s.

That implies that CCs are worth more than NCs. Cuban marketing at work...

Check out the New world part of the forum. There's a few threads with recommendations for NCs. That'll help picking the right ones to try. Some NCs are just pepper bombs and partly the reason why many people have prejudice against them. Those threads will help you get a good start into the world of NCs.

Think about it this way. Only Smoking Cuban cigars is like only drinking Bordeaux wine. You end up smoking great cigars but you'll miss out on the variety that the rest of the world has to offer.

No Cuban is particularly strong if properly aged. Full flavoured yes, but strong, harsh and heavy nicotine Hits tend to come from young fresh cigars.
