  • Has the world gone mad?

Was anyone else bidding on Mitch's auction yesterday? I won a couple of lots, from the 70's at a fair price IMHO but i noted that Lot 529 Cohiba Reserva Seleccion box Dec 02 (same as mine) fetched £5,800, add charges I make that at least £7,000 ( more if they charged it to a credit card), so £230+ a stick! I paid £30 a stick from Gesto's in 2016 & there were that to me, the best box of cigars I ever bought but I can only imagine this box is destined to go to China?

Its going to get worse in the next few years, with inflation running wild people will be looking into other assets. Similar is happening in the fine wine and spirits sectors as well.

I placed a bid on a couple of bits didn't win anything and wasn't too bothered I didn't win but I agree some of the lots went for silly prices I understand Cohiba is a premium name but I could never bring myself to pay that for some sticks just my opinion

Indeed Drewster, I understand price is subjective, I just think those cigars are never going to be smoked, just kept 10yrs & then re-sold. I bought a pack of Statos Delirious & an R&J Churchill Tubed Churchill both from 70's. I am sure there are those who think £55+ charges for a single is crazy enough but I have had these vintage churchills before & providing it's been stored well, I am sure it'll be a brilliant smoke. If it's been kept in an ordinary drawer for 30yrs, I'll be shedding a tear as the powdered leaves fall to pieces in beams of sunlight.
I'll let you know how they smoke.

I bid on some Monte No 4 and 5 and some other bits but I forgot about it and didn't win when it finished but I wasn't really fussed.

I guess that's the risk you take buying auction they could be great smokes or dust in a box I hope they smoke well for you mate 👍

I wish I'd hung on to the box I had!

I’d be surprised if anything bought in such auctions ever gets smoked. They’re just investments which will be sold on in the future. Nobody will care if they’re good smokes.

I think Simon Bolivar will be smoking his, seems a good way to get vintage smokes if that is your thing.

Sure will but I think Kickback was thinking of the complete boxes, ER/EL boxes & Pre-Rev, stuff worth £5-20K, you can't imagine anyone being brave enough to smoke one & reduce the value by £££.
Just a tip to remember, it's always tricky thinking of the extra charges that will be added, I find +30% works close enough & it was for my lots this time.

Some of the recent auction prices have been incredible. I notice some of the lots down under are also starting to creep up too.
