  • Aged Cubans for Auction?

My friend is getting his hands on part of his investment from years ago. They have been stored for him & is now finally able to get access to them.

    Cohiba Piramides LE 2001

Excuse my ignorance, but I can't tell the difference to this on H&F

It could very well be the image, but the font on "La Habana, Cuba" looks quite thick compared to reference pics

Likewise, that box is not original, so I'm guessing no serial numbers are available?

I only have that image from him, but will try to find out more when he gets them. Thanks for the advice so far. Always keen to learn something new, especially when there are so many fake cigars around 🙏🏻

Well, Cohiba Pirámides fakes are rampant. Throw them in a glass top box for extra hoodwink points.

Investigating closer, it also appears that the cigars in the picture have a much larger black border above the gold circles on the LE band than both the ref pics

I'd be interested to hear the story of said investment from years ago that he's only now just getting. Just seems, suspect... ?

The white also looks very white for a 25 yr old band. Plus the white box is overlapping the squares.
These bands are from a Lancero and Siglo V from 2001, no overlap and much more of a yellow hue.

The fact that the Cohiba are loose singles with no box or paperwork will make them a tough sell.
CGars Auction sells singles though so it might be worth trying there

I think you've nailed why those bands immediately gave me the heebs, before I'd even taken a closer look.

                    They look brand new.

The Cohiba on some touch the top of the white box. Some touch the bottom... Looks bad so far. Sorry mate.

I believe he and a business partner invested in some pre-Covid Cubans while on business in Hong Kong, and either his business partner has kept them for him (in HK) or they've been stored by where he bought them from. Hopefully they check out ok.

It's interesting to see, now you've highlighted the discrepancies, the differences there are between them. People like me with my lack of knowledge is probably what keeps these fake producers in business. I mean I know not to buy off guys on the beach, and even in the lobby of the (pretty decent) hotel we stayed in in Mexico 15 years ago I was dubious (thankfully took some of my own), but I'd probably still be fooled (hopefully less so after your insights) today. I wonder if my friend realises

Are there many other brands copied as much as Cohiba?

Ultimately people will produce fake anything in the hope of making a quick buck & many grey market vendors have been caught out too
A Miami business owner is accused of selling stolen goods and amassing more than $1 million worth of counterfeit cigar labels and boxes.
