  • Age My Box!

    Morning folks,
I bought this box at auction in 2011 from a CGars auction, when they claimed it had a certain age. No I have returned 12 for returning to the auction. They are now wanting to be far more recent in their appraisal.

Any Cuban sleuths out there can figure out which 'HECHO EN CUBA' stamp this is, you can find it on the Cuban Cigar Info Site, under packaging. The Slide lid box is very old but I can't find dates when they were discontinued. The cigars themselves were discontinued in the 90's.

Can one of the Mods please move the pic's from the Price rise thread to here please, don't know why but can't add here direct myself???

Hi Banos,They are Panatela Largos, by name & vitola (same as Elegantes, which were continued to be produced until 2002). Size 28 x 6 7/8". Unfortunately, I didn't measure the 'Hecho en Cuba' stamp before handing them over, as I wasn't expecting them to question the age.
I know is makes dating by the stamp very difficult but if anyone knows how many workers were still visible on the tax label in the 70's, that would be useful? I have read before how they faded with time, using the same set print but can't find the article. Just a long shot I know.

        "Warranty Seal - 1962 to 1999
This seal is similar to the previous seal but without the perforations.

Over the years, due to wear and tear of the printing plates, the nine workmen visible in the field reduced until the 1980/1990s, when only five are clearly visible"

And if we can find the box dimensions we can work out the stamp dimensions.

How are they reconciling that a box they sold has suddenly become younger on inspection?

Does this take with your original purchase? I asked AI, but haven't checked all these details.

Conclusion: Your box is almost certainly from the mid-1960s to early 1970s.
            Warranty Seal No serial/barcode; English/French text 1962 – 1999
Seal Placement Pasted flat on the cedar bottom 1960s – early 1970s
Bottom Stamp "Hecho en Cuba" in an oval border 1960s – late 1970s
Ink Codes None present Pre 1985

Good question, I just wanted someone's else's opinion before I press my point this morning.

Cheers Banos, appreciate your thoughts, they mirror my own. I bought as 1970's & to say now they might be as late as the 90's is crazy, which I could find something on the style of box as I am sure that dates it well before the 80's too. Either way, they should sell for more than I paid for the box, if so I enjoyed some great smokes for free!

Success! I used the info you sent Banos,& they have agreed it's a 70's box & will sell it as such. It'll be on tge next auction in March. Thanks again for your assistance.
