Okay, I want thoughts and opinions please on the Partagas 898 Varnished and Unvarnished. How do you think they differ? As far as I know all they have in common is part of the name but I want to know peoples thoughts as it is one of the Partagas range I know relatively little about.
Cheers.
"In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love, they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock!"

Now look what you've done!!
Just had a varnished or two recently so had a quite fresh opinion on them, right, I thought I'll dig out that 90's box of unvarnished, see if the've got any better; can I find them: can I?

The 898 unvarnished - the smaller of the two, a corona grande - is mild for a Partagas, more rustic, much less complex, much less interesting than the 898v IMO. It's discontinued and I really don't miss it.

I've not tried the unvarnished, but that appears to be the approximate consensus of opinion, from what I've heard/read/seen.
I'm about halfway through a '98 box of varnished that I've had for 5 or 6 years. I keep thinking they're going to come good one of these days, but they've never done it for me (nor infact did any of the singles I'd had prior) like the P2's, Lusi's or D4's that I've recently smoked.
My brother raves about them though - so it really is just down to personal taste. Maybe I should try one again soon, as I do seem to be back on better terms with the Partagas style than I have been for a few years.
Hmm. Deano tried the unvarnished and loved it, I regret passing up the chance now.
