Partagas SD4

Had my first ever PSD4 over the weekend and either I dont get the hype over this cigar or I just and a very young or bad cigar.

The one I smoked was one from a pack of three tubos I bought in May.

The cigar I had had a very tight draw with reasonable smoke and not so great taste I was hoping for.

This cigar couldn't hold a candle to the RYJ short Churchill which is my cigar of choice when time and weather permits.

When SD4's are good, they really take some beating as a general go to smoke. IMHO

I really don't rate the D4 at all...they've always been quite 'grassy' to my palate. But never say never...
Try a JL2 instead...

They can be brilliant, but I've had some newbies that don't have the same profile. Best left a year or two.

Can't say that I've ever had an R&J which has beaten a Partagas of the same format.

I have a few in the humi but was warned about smoking them as they are quite a strong cigar. Told not to smoke unless it's after a big/decent size meal. Is this true or are they a nice mellow go to cigar.
I don't want to smoke it and have the experience ruined by being to eager

I think it may depend on how long you've been smoking cigars, Mark. I've enjoyed one after a small lunch many times, but I think they make a fantastic after dinner smoke.

I've had average ones, but when you get one at its peak it's a remarkable cigar.

One thing that I've noticed over the years is that the SD4 can vary from box dates. If you get a good box stock up. My favorite Robust when on.

Looks like I will be leaving the other two to rest in the humi for a couple of years.

I was hoping to take them on my holiday to Thailand in 3 weeks.

Hmm - I did the exact same thing about a month ago but from Stanstead. I have to say based on that experience I won't be buying from duty-free again, they weren't exactly kept in optimal conditions and haven't smoked very nicely either.


I would be more inclined to buy some tubos online, perhaps from outside the UK - maybe from Geneva or Canary Islands...

Thanks for the advice. I mostly buy from the Canary Islands but thought I would buy a few singles to try but would certainly want well kept cigars so will have to pop down to charingcross rd next time in convent garden to get the singles

Good luck with the SD 4's...took some tubes to Sri Lanka & they were a huge disapointment IMHO... lousy burn, iffy draw & quite harsh.
Must admit I've had better SD 4's but will look very carefully at Partagas consistency in future...

Pretty much the same as my first experience with a Party4. And, because I tried smoking it on an empty stomach it packed a fair nicotine hit. When they're bad they can be very, very bad. But when they're good, they're excellent and loads better than the RYJ SC in IMHO.

I've only ever had good one so I guess I'm lucky. A strong cigar that packs a punch. I still think the P2 is a better smoke overall. Try a Hoyo Epi 2, very good robusto.
