  • Getting on the property ladder

Im not sure if anyones interrested in this but i will post it up anyway

So me and my girlfriend have just bought our first property at the age of 19 and this is a huge step up in the world for us
its located in a new town called cambourne on the outskirts of cambridge so we can both easily comute to cambridge and london

does anyone have any advice for moving in to your first house from there own experiences? anything to do or not to do that helps out?

also i am a big fan of collecting oddities and curios for example taxidermy and antique weaponary if anyone has anything interrested that they would be willing to part with (for cash ofcourse) then please let me know antique furnitures and normal furnitures also welcome

this is our lovely new 3 bedroom garage the garage will be my gunroom/gentlemans club

Don't plan ahead too much.... move in with the bare essentials and let the house grow around you. You'll have all sorts of plans for "this can go here" and "we can use this room for this" live there and let the house develop around you. Apart from that don't sweat it and make do with hand me downs and second hand furniture... it makes things much more homely. Unless of course you're the sort of person who likes minimalism. In that case spend all your money on very little. lol

    Good luck.

we would like it to have character! i cant stand the kind of houses that are just plain white and look like something from an ikea photo shoot!

we are also looking for the bare essentials as well!

That is a nice looking property. Sounds like you have a plan!

I am in the same boat as you, only I don't have a property yet! The girlfriend is laying her trust in me, and nags me. My plan is to buy a complete sh!t hole and do it up.

          Congratulations Noodles!

I hope everything runs smoothly with the moving in process. It can be far to easy to get carried away buying and making lists of all the things you want to make the place perfect, just be careful to take it easy, and make sure youre not over spending on luxury goods for the house straight away.

My biggest piece of advice, is do whatever you can to not get on the wrong side of your neighbours. Having great understanding neighbours, who you treat with respect, will make your life 100 times easier. If you piss them off too much, and do too much to give them a reason to start overreacting, then doing even the smallest thing, can result in making your life hell.

I've always been fortunate and had great neighbours. I've had friends who have had their lives made hell however from neighbours, and it just turned into a disaster!

Good shot on getting into property so young, wise move, Fences are now considered joint responsibility, so a friendly word and offer to share the job.

What is wrong with said fence?

If it was me, I wouldnt mention the fence straight away, but that might just be me wanting to be friendly. If you march straight in requesting expenses be paid out to fix a fence you don't like the sight of, then that would be what I would slide into the 'pissing your new neighbours off' box.

And just out of curiousity, what makes it their fence, and not yours?

Check with the police if a garage is acceptable for firearm storage, most will say no or request reinforcement and alarms etc. esp as its not attached to the house.

Also from the off put energy saving bulbs in everywhere and get one of those plugs that turns all the crap off when you turn the tv off.

I did this and my electric bill was ?17 per month.

Have some blankets behind the sofa so you/the mrs don't put the heeting on an hour before you go to bed cos its a little cold.

Its so easy to piss money up the wall on bills that can be easily saved.

As said above well done on getting on the ladder, don't go mad just live in it for a little while then you will find any niggles that annoy you ( creaky doors/ floors etc) if it's not already done insulate the hell out of the place including the loft, under doors, letterbox etc- the cost of insulation dosnt rise too much where as utility bills do!! CFL bulbs as said etc get the house right first then start filling it!!

Looking for Monte Sublimes if you have any?

by law you are responsible for your T mark (which can be found on your property blueprints and will normally be one of your fence boundaries and the rest belong to your neighbours i dont mind forking out the money with them to fix it if it avoids problems and arguements

as for the heating i preffer the use of extra clothing and like you recommended eddie blankets on the sofa is brilliant!

as for firearms i am fully licenced to have them and they are ok to be in my garage which is fully secured and insured! if anyone wants to thing about invading my home bring it on with equipment and training! i have educated myself in defensive law and can punish them without causing legal troubles for myself

i have found a beautiful cherry wood humi for my office desk
and a beautiful cherry wood ashtray/cutter/stand box aswell

as for energy saving lightbulbs can you get ones that just look normal? as most look rather weird

and what is the name of this tv plug thing i will look it up

I spend 3.5 years selling firearms (in a very busy shop) so know a thing or 2 about licensing, I'd be surprised of you are allowed to store in the garage. Check with your FEO before bolting the cabinet in there.

Depends on what the comp is , my 357 mag revolver isn't much use at 1k yards. But my 308 isn't much use in a steel plate comp at 7 yards. The .22lr doesn't hack it deer stalking and the canon is my go to for a target canon comp!!!

thinking about it im probably not going to keep my weaponry in the garage not only is it a security risk but i dont want my older items to not be damaged by damp or any other strange occurance!

if anyone lives around the cambridge area and fancies a celebratory smoke with me regarding the house i think it would be a good way to get to know some of you!
