Some brilliant stuff in here that I missed being away.

When I used to have a bit more time on my hands, I knocked up these scales for a straight that I salvaged...

I love it! I got a straight razor at Christmas but it doesn't hold a good edge.... I keep meaning to get a high quality one, there just always seems to be something that comes up with money recently that stops me.

Out of curiosity, what is it and what did/do you use to put the edge on Marc?

It's branded RenRen, I'm assuming it wasn't expensive as it was a stocking filler from my little sister.

I have an old oil stone which works wonders on my knives and a leather and linen strop.

The ones I have been looking at spending g a bit of cash on are in no particular order: Dovo, Thier-Issard, Henckels, Wostenholm and a few others I can't remember right now.

Marc you will need more than a oil stone to put a edge on a straight I use a 1k chosera to set a bevel then work my way up to 12k for a finishing. Most duel oil stones are not even 500 at there finest. The one I use for my knifes is 500 and I can shave my arm at that but would not put it near my face. Put up some pics of yours might be ok.

I've wanted a straight razor for years, gonna treat myself if or when I decide to lose the beard.

My local cigar shop also specialise in cut throaght razors, I got my lighter there so they owe me a good deal, might finally get one. Problem is I look ten if I shave properly.

I have exactly the same problem, I literally cannot by a beer without ID when I'm clean shaven.

They more than likely won't be ready to go right out the box tommy so don't let that put you off.

It's a very very old Arkansas Black stone that was my great grandfathers, people use them successfully on a shaving forum I lurk at, though I'm not sure what grit it would equate to but at a guess I would say early to mid thousands.

Though as you suggest everyone seems to use water stones in grades up to crazy numbers like you say and report that water stones work much quicker.

It's entirely possible that I'm just awful at making an edge. Lol
