Though as you suggest everyone seems to use water stones in grades up to crazy numbers like you say and report that water stones work much quicker.

It's entirely possible that I'm just awful at making an edge. Lol
A arkansas stone would be able to put a finish on a razor but as natural they all vary in grade, though I would use it as a finisher after working through the graes before as would take a really long time to go from blunt to shaving sharp on it. If you want to play about I could send you a old coticule i have lying about.

Sounds good, thanks! Have you any experience of the couple of eBay sellers that claim to sell properly shave ready?

If I got into straight razors in a big enough way, I would be tempted to heave a small rotation of them and send them off to someone for work when they needed it.

Late back on this and rascal has offered an opinion on the Arkansas. Perhaps invest in a 4/8 or 5/8 Dovo as a decent beginners straight and again as rascal suggests, a coticule as an all in one stone. A coticule and slurry stone will see you and your edge right[emoji106] I'd imagine with your level of aptitude/skill Marc, you'd end up honing your own without sending them out. Talk about it at the weekend if you like.

Well it's not looking good for my Straight Razor, I found a review on a well respected shaving forum and the reviewer described it as a "Pocket knife disguised as a razor."

He suggested that the grind profile out of the box is horrendous for shaving, even dangerous and is more like the grind one would find on a carving knife.

He suggests that with a lot of work by an experience honer that it could be made to shave but the quality of the steel really isn't worth it.... Looks like I'm in the market for a decent straight edge and while I would love a Dovo and will most certainly get one, for now they are temporarily out of my price range.

So off I go to eBay in search of an old English or German blade.... Interesting fact I found out is that during the height of razor making even the Germans thought that Sheffield steel was the best and the made in Solingen stamp often means "Hand ground in Solingen from Sheffield steel."

Had a notion for a straight razor myself a while back, from what I've read online its highly recommended NOT to buy any form of straight razor of eBay. I seem to recall its a lot of preparation to get them ready to shave!

Due to tremors in my hands im gonna give the cut throats a miss lest they live up to their namesake!

While I would normally agree, if you look close enough there are a couple retailers on there that are very meticulous in their descriptions. I think they are associated with a couple of the big shaving forums and recondition razors to further their hobby. Some go for cheap so I'm willing to take a punt.

A couple of things I've made in the past...

                  Outdoor aviary (6ft x 6ft x 3ft)

Double breeder cages and rosette holder

                  More double breeders

Polished the frame of my old sports bike to a mirror finish

…and my best creation to date …my little boy

                          You don't hang around ay!

Is it shave ready Marc? It looks like it may have a wee frown (slight dish in the centre of the blade) from the picture, but it's hard to tell. Bring it along Sunday. It can be stashed in the car if you're driving so there's no chance of having a 'weapon' on you[emoji16] If you're using public transport perhaps not.
