The Tornado was a great sounding plane, used to feel it in your ribcage when they gave it some beans.

I remember a Tornado breaking the sound barrier by a considerable margin at conningsby once, it caused a sonic boom that hit you like a hammer. The commentator said the pilot was probably going to be in for it when he landed. Lol

We used to have some great afternoons out at Cottesmore, living only 1/2 our drive away. You could park at the fence and look over (security was pretty lax back then) and see the Tornado's having their engines tested right the other side.

Know no technical plane stuff but I looked up one day heading down South & saw the Vulcan flying overhead to go & bomb Stanley airfield. It was flying fairly low & looked enormous. They say it was more about the phsycological impact than the damage it caused, of them knowing that we could hit them for so far. Well I can believe that coz it was scarey enough watching it when it was on ourside!

I was also on HMS Illustrious '84/85 & saw several displays by the Harriers including a joust infront of the Admirals wife & gathered journalists. The two harriers came in from opposing ends of the ship, met in the middle turned faced the crown on the bridge, dipped their refueling lances in salute, then faced each other again & just hoovering above the deck they lifted off vertically (Sea Harriers can lift vertically but don't usually as it uses too much fuel, hence the raised ramps on the Invincible class). They climbed so slowly I felt I could reach out & touch the wing. Once safely up they gave an airel dogfight as good as anything in Top Gun. As part of the Heli Deck First Team we spent quite a few hrs covering flying. The only draw back was that the First Aid Locker only had one door so if they had been a crashed on deck & there was a subsequent fire, we would have been toast inside.

Talking of airshows, we have been looking just this week for booking to go to New Zealand in 2016 for this:

For three days over Easter, Wanaka becomes the centre-stage of a world-famous Warbirds Airshow. Some of the most famous Warbirds join forces with aircraft of yesteryear

I'm not sure how well a Puro and the delicate whiff of Kerosene will go together

I would love to go to New Zealand, I think you should go for it if you can.
