The box art. The RyJ brand on the front should always be central .... where it is is how it appears on the inside lid. The colours on the dress banding are all wrong for Cuban RyJ and the side panels on RyJ should have the RyJ name in a red block on blue coloured field with a white panel beneath carrying the vitola name.
The general shape of the box suggests it's for Tubes.
Goes to show that us newbies should hold on to any boxes we get for comparison purposes
With Ebay's guarantees you could probably buy a lot more safely than with Jeremy's List then report them as fake and get your money back. Now there's an idea!
They probably came from DR .... rolled in a factory called Romeo y Julieta 2000 or some such. The cigars are then sold through DR tobacconists without mention of their origin. Habanos will eventually get the factory closed, but the owners and money will have disappeared by then, and a similar factory will open a few yards down the road. RyJ and Montecristo are the main targets as these are the most universally familiar brands.
If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!
I messaged the guy and told them they were fakes so he came back and asked how I could tell whilst denying it. I cut and pasted your notes Arf, hope you don't mind.
I was bidding on a pair of Mannikin cigars from the 70s that Ebay pulled but fortunately I had messaged the seller so we're just sorting out a price. He offered me these four Willem IIs, do they have any novelty value? No idea of age.

They would make a pretty humidor filler depends on the price if it's worth it or not.
And on the plus side you have more than one to smoke and try

I got them for 75p each, remains to see what they're like. More importantly I got the Mannikins for my nascent collection of little oldies.
Oh well, if they smoke ok, winner.
If they smoke like Hamlets, well, they are a display no one else has got

I wouldn't pay what he asking but I reckon they're real.... The lid art logo actually is off-centre on RyJ boxes... At least on my Dukes, WCs, Mille Fleurs and Exhi 3s!! The colour for the dress banding look fine too if not a little over-exposed from the camera
