  • Cheap Medical and Clinical supplies UK

I'm putting together what I consider to be a relatively comprehensive emergency medical kit for spending extended time out in the sticks.

I'm wondering if any of you guys know a good and cheap clinical supplier where I don't have to order in the 100's of items?

I'm also struggling to find sterile suture's and medical skin adhesive (medical superglue)

    Any ideas?

Medisave is quite reasonable usually. How far out in the sticks are we talking?

        Found some good info here.

        "A cheaper alternative...Veterinary Glues
If you are looking for something for your personal first aid kit and don't fancy spending ?120 on 6 x 5ml vials of Derma Bond, veterinary glues are commercially available as a happy compromise; not licensed for use on humans but essentially the same stuff in a different wrapper.

        2-octyl cyanoacrylate Surgi-Lock and Nexaband
n-butyl cyanoacrylate VetGlu, Vetbond and LiquiVet"

Getting further and further hopefully. My aim is to end up having a full week with just what I can carry.

Now that's the kind of thinking I like!

The main issue is that modern superglue has acrylic that does not break down in a timely fashion and if it gets inside you, you can end up with long term toxicity issues.

The real medical stuff breaks down much much faster and isn't as toxic.

Your problem, VTG, is that these are only really sold in bulk at wholesale and the price is inflated quite dramatically by the resellers. Having said that you can get some kits like this or this might be something to build on. I'm assuming you have training in suturing and wound closure if you're taking this stuff. One word of caution, any wound closure can trap bacteria within the wound but dermabond doesn't allow you to pop a suture if the wound gets infected so really is best used only if you can properly clear a wound. Some of these would probably be more useful than glue if it came to that.

@EdBlackadder ^ Always flush and disinfect the wound thoroughly before closing.... Always leave a drain hole in the wound for seepage.

Always practice suturing on oranges and don't even think about down it on yourself, move on to pigs skin (pigs feet are cheep as chips in Morrison's.) and still think twice about doing it on yourself.

Follow strict suture removal timescales depending on body location.... Unless the wound is clearly taking longer to heal.

                      Face: 3-5 days
                      Scalp: 7-10 days
                      Arms and legs: 10-14 days
                      Joints: 14 days

Buy topical Benzocaine/Lidocaine Spray cuz if I'm ever unfortunate enough to have to do it it's gonna hurt like hell. And I sure as hell ain't gonna get my hands on Benzocaine/Lidocaine for Hypodermic administration.... Although I have seen Lidocaine under the name 'Lignocaine' for horses but I would be far to worried about working out correct dosage to ever use it.

Marc I can see your logic with this but honestly how far from help do you envisage being?

Far enough to be out of phone reception and in my book that's far enough. Don't get me wrong, if professional help is available that's what's getting done and first and foremost I don't want to be hurt in the fist place.

But I never want to be in the position to think, damn I can't get help and why can't I seal this cut.

My Auntie was once stuck in a cave with three more caver's for 3 days before they were rescued... And she was a trained climbing and caving rescuer.

Generally wise advice though pork skin isn't much like human once you start trying to put suture needles through it. Mind, its hard to find human skin on sale in Morrison's...

I really learnt suturing on human ears so I have a slightly odd technique and I've never really tried to keep the skills up.
