A pen name, a name that people hide behind when they write something that they may not want attributed to them or a name used by an author when there is another author with the same name. I couldn't publish a book as John Rankine because there is a writer with that name so would have to use a 'nom de plume'.

It makes sense when you think about it. Pens used to be quills/feather so nom De plume is 'name of the feather/pen....UKCF exporting culture and language throughout the world....
