Bushcraft Pipe

Really fancy having a go at something like this but am a complete novice.
The guy says maple for the stem. Anyone know other good materials for stem or bowl.

He talks about the stem being already dried but the bowl green. Take it that means he has nabbed them at different times of year, When would that be?

Green means the wood hasn't been dried, and that's asking for a cracked bowl.

For the bowl, fruit wood Will be best after Briar obviously. Cherry, Apple, Pear, Plum, Olive are all readily available.For the stem you want something straight and non toxic. Hazel would be a good choice IMO.

Don't get the Bear Grylls saw, go for a Bahco Laplander it's universally praised as the best folding saw for that kind of money, though Aldi and Lidle get a copy in for about ?6 that's passable. 're knife I would look at a Mora or a Hultafors and wouldn't pay more than about ?15.

I'd say Wigan you'd be better off buying some Frosts wood carving knives by Mora ,
Have you ever whittled as a youngster and got fairly proficient with a knife. One thing to be very wary of as VTG will confirm as well these knives are razor sharp if your not used to the dexterity and basic carving skills I'd suggest a little groundwork first , whittling greener wood and learning the different techniques, usage and position of hands thumbs etc and use of force ( the more finer detail especially if your moving on to carving seasoned wood requires a strong grip and hands locking the knife in position and the force is more from your sternum ) different types of cuts , I know it seems a knife is a simple tool but as you use them more intricately they can become terribly close to causing major damage if your using them unwisely.

Wigan , be prepared to fuck a few up first mate and practice quiet a bit lol , wood is a wonderful material but I'd highly recommend seasoned wood , practice making one with green wood to get your hand in and techniques , but green wood will shrink yes I build with green oak and tightens and shrinks lovely , but for a more intricate item use seasoned we're talking about a pipe ,
It's a bit like building a dresser using green wood to lock off the dovetails , what bollocks

if you watch the video right to the end it shows a heap of pipes. I reckon none of them get smoked just carved for fun so practising on green wood would be a shout

Oski has some great points, the Frost whittling knives are something I have wanted for a while as is a bowl/spoon knife. They are wickedly sharp especially the carbon steel ones. I suppose it depends if you want to use the pipe after or not.

Olive wood chopping boards are a good source of wood.

I like the idea of going for a walk then having a sit down and doing a bit of green carving whilst smoking a pipe. Reckon them knives you suggested would would get me arrest. Yeah, they are about ?15 and you can get 4ish pipes or sometimes more out of them.

Just seen this one, in England it's 3" and no locking mechanism. But if you have a reason for carrying it and your not in a high crime area then your good to go.

I often carry a 6" blade while camping, I just keep it in my bag until needed.

To be clear, almost anything can be classed as an offensive weapon, you need reasonable justification for carrying it. A knife is a tool so to carry one for that use is reasonable justification.

If you fancy doing that Wigan you can't beat a good old Swiss army knife , very good small saw , and two good blades that take a very sharp edge, the small blade is especially good for carving .
Most of us started with one I've had my current Swiss army camping for 25 years .
A very good legal EDC
