I recently did some work for one of the Noth west's biggest car retailers and the manager has just sold his Ferrari for an i8..... He said that 4.4 seconds is an under estimate.
More like 3.5 according to him.

i8 looks cool and apparently a nice drive, but to me they look like they'll age terribly and will probably go straight from "futuristic" to "dated". Good demonstration of how hybrid tech can be applied in the real world though (not bloated, overweight slow monstrosities like the Prius or gazzillion pound hypercars)
Some of the Merc hybrids also look interesting, I'm sure I read of an S Class with 100mpg+ economy, and the e-class hybrid seems to work well.
The i8 is one end of the hybrid market. We're at the other. Bought an Ampera last May, Vauxhall's unsung plug-in hybrid (aka Chevy Volt). Essentially it's designed as a mass market family car, tho' only 4 seats, bit bigger than an Astra.
Does 30-45 miles on battery, plus 300 on full tank of petrol engine. Sadly, does not do 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, but it is still great to drive. Even in petrol mode, it's all electric transmission so no gears. Feels like a top of the range luxury car cos so quiet and smooth.
Downside: it's more expensive than a conventional car, so hasn't sold well. I wonder if BMW, Tesla, etc got it right - build an expensive, almost concept car to build interest gradually, while the mass market decides what it wants.
