Fishing on the Hant's Avon at the Royalty, for Pike, 2miles upstream from Christchurch Harbour; when I had a screaming run on a joey as high tide approached. Had been informed of 4 upper dbles caught in the last week in this stretch so immediately thought it must the biggest (as any fisherman would!).
After it managed to pull line from my tight clutch on a 2.75lb tc rod, I saw a silver flank & thought Sea Trout but closer in &I realised it was a Sea Bass.
60cms & 6lb 92oz, as my 1st Bass, a new PB. After 55yrs of fishing, new species PB's don't occur too often. I was tempted to take it but as my 1st I slipped it back. Took some time to recover before it swam off.
Enjoyed my Hoyo Palmas Extra, in stages, had been smoking it before the Bass, re-lit
& then had a run on the other rod, even better initial run but a smaller Bass, unfortunately lost at the net.
In Morrison's later I was told it could have been worth £50!

Good stuff, not long now until proper pike season is upon us although could still do with some rain.

Good session Gav, my PB is a very modest 3lb 3oz, on a live gudgeon, whislt piking. Back in '77 that was a decent Chub! 🤪
Had a very short session this morning, found the water full of silkweed 😔
