I have just seen this post on Facetube about unscrupulous people going around with hand held card terminals that are wireless enabled, typing in ?30 (the max allowed by this payment method) and touching it against your wallet thereby stealing your money.

Knowing we have a few that walk the thin blue line on here, i wondered if anyone heard of this being done? Or is it the usual facebook crap?

Is it worth getting RFID blocking card sleaves or wallets that block RFID?

Been a big thing in the states for a while now. They seemingly don't have a lower limit like our cards over here.

Keep your cards/wallet in chest pocket and keep the awareness up.

Personally I don't have any of that contactless and forever telling people that unless they have a good reason to be that close to me they should step back! 👌👌

I've never heard of it and I take up to a hundred calls a day, sounds possible though.

A scarey thought, it litteraly takes a second so they wouldnt have to be that close to you for long to nick some dosh.

Time to take some precautions i think!

@nubchugger, just read up on this subject, seems a lot of American card suppliers are steering away from contactors for this reason, also there's been an increase in skimming information from the relatively new biometric passports, giving all necessary information even biometric photo of the passport holder, allowing for the possibility of cloning the passport...
Just goes to show you no matter how secure we try to make things there's always someone out there that will develop tech to get around it...

It was only a matter of time this guys knew how to work the system. Especially in London with the over crowded tubes this can easily be done

Might be worth looking at something like this perhaps

Apparently some of the new skimmers can scan up to three feet away so don't even need to be within touching distance, and depending on the card certain ones give out a lot more information.... scary thought...

                  Very scarey thought,

I'm going to enquire at my Bank if the facility can be disabled.

Might just be being paranoid but is it worth the risk......i know it's only ?30 but i'd rather it was in my pocket than some scumbags

There's so much documentation to show how to capture card details using your phone then using your phone to spend the card details.

It looks so easy...was gonna try it but need to root your phone...which I don't like doing...scary stuff.

                      RFID readers

Although there seems to be risks, I'm not going to panic too much - John has never even taken a call about it so can't be that wide spread a problem

Also, I'm sure that it is easy to see which scanner took the money and where it goes, so if banks get reports that this bank account is stealing money they will have to give you a refund.

Regarding the scanner scanning three feet away - it's potentially reading multiple different cards at the same time (especially in city centres) - would they really be able to process so many at once? Those of us in London have heard enough about card clash to last a lifetime. From what I have seen you would also need to put in the details for each individual transaction (except for Oyster but that seems to be processed later anyway) so I'm not sure it would just be a case of someone wondering around London with a scanner in their pocket.

I would also assume there is some validation of the card readers to allow them to work

The banks must also have weighed up the risks, which for them includes reputational damage, and they obviously feel the positives outweigh the negatives.

I don't have any contactless payment cards, but do have Apple Pay, which strikes me as the most secure method of all as you need either your finger print or passcode to use it

                          Interesting read.
So it is possible to do, but highly unlikely as money will be trackable to the scumbags account that stole it.

yea from the looks of it...I was doing some more research last night its so easy for thieves to copy your card though and spend it in a supermarket easily which might be harder to prove. I normally skim pass the contactless payments in my statement, but will be keeping a good eye on it now!!

                            here's the guys demo

Security researcher Peter Fillmore uses an Android app to clone a Visa NFC card. Full story at Forbes here: http://www.forbes.com/sites/thomasbrewster/2015/0...

This is simply another potential way you may be a victim of crime, of course as long as thieves exist no system will ever be 100% secure, but I honestly don't think you can spend your life worrying about it

Be vigilant of course and make sure the money that goes out of your accounts is money you spent, but we should be doing that anyway
