  • So I know a colleague who carves kayak paddles from red cedar...

And I asked what he does with the shavings? I was thinking of using them " as part of the process"

Time with cigars, the lighting and everything connected with it is an attempt not only to enjoy them but to empty work from my mind. I thought I could use the shavings as part of a (positive) time consuming heating lighting process.

So he provided a small boxful. These strands are collected and rolled into medium lengths (bit like a naked roll up ).

I tend to have a robusto or bigger so it can take three of these to heat/ light up but the whole process is beneficial in terms of focus and concentration.

Apologies for the rubbish pic. As you can see it does favour a still day but I persevered on Saturday.

They burn very hot and do the trick. They need pre lit of course but it's a fast take so I don't mind.

Not to try and dissuade you, but Red Cedar is a cath term for around 5 different treed from different families.

At least one of these trees is known to cause serious cumulative respiratory issues. Some of the others are lesser allergens.

I would personally stick to matches or lighters if I wasnt 100% sure of what I was dealing with at a taxonomic level.

Wood is lovely stuff but some of it can wreak havock on the human body.

        Lol, there is that.

Just be wary as unlike tobacco which might kill you in the long run, wood toxicity can have some pretty serious symptoms that come on fairly quickly.

        Stay safe and have fun.
