  • Electric MTB.

I had a go on this earlier and I have to say I'm absolutely gobsmacked. I go riding at least once a week and I keep seeing electric mountain bikes and I think to myself 'why would you bother, it's cheating' but boy was I wrong. It was without a doubt one of the best rides to date. Whizzing around at 30mph and barely peddling although they are expensive now, the price should drop over the next couple of years and I will be getting one.

I saw an advert for them last night on TV gtech the company who make the vacuums..

I have the same impression as you..feels like cheating...only way to really know how good it is to jump on one.

O wow....never knew they were that pricy.

O ok....how does it work? Start peddling and the motor kicks in?

It battery just boosts your speed. Big time. So your normal peddling will be say 10mph this kicks in and keeps going while you're peddling and brings you up to say 18-20mph but doing the same peddling as 10mph.

The price tags does vary a lot depending on where you go. The HT version at my mates shop will set you back ?2800 which is good compared to other places.

O ok...that's quite cool. Not bad cut journey times by half.

That's a bit more affordable but still quite high...not a cyclist my self used to be when I was younger but got a few guys at work who love there bikes and spend about 2k on a normal bike.

So you still work just as hard, just go twice as fast? Personally I dont like the idea of bikes becoming motorized like this, I just cant see the point. If you want to go fast, get a motorbike

I'll plough on with my trusty old diamond back mountain bike. It might be slow and heavy but it does the job and i burn some calories riding it! In all seriousness I'd consider something like the above when the price drops, if cycling was quicker and easier I'd use the car less.

Utter tosh, ride a proper mountain bike or just get a motorbike if thats what you want.

The ONLY place this has on a mountain bike track is as an aid for riders with specific disabilities to help get them out on the trails.

The reality is that city bike tossers will get them and treat them as taxless, licenceless motor vehicles and give proper cyclists an even worse name than we have now.

Looks like fun. I used to ride everywhere as I didn't have a car. As soon as I got a car (10 years ago) the bike lost its appeal. I miss cycling but I'm too busy/lazy to go out. One of these could tempt me back on a bike.

I was a roadie so had a selection of bikes. I ended up ill with an unrelated illness and hit gym to build myself back up . Havnt looked back from that however still have a single speed bike which I enjoy....The simplicity

I guess I would ride an assisted bike but wouldn't pay silly money for it

A mate of mine has an electric bicycle with a throttle that gets up to 30mph
