  • GROUSE SHOOTING

First they pick on the smokers , now by the sounds of things they are starting on the people that shoot
heard on the radio this morning first is the grouse after that it's the pheasants.

Thousands are calling for a ban on grouse shooting, arguing the sport increases the threat faced by an endangered species of raptors.

its been rife on social media this year... and has also spawned a similar petition to have Chris Packham fired or disciplined for using the BBC to promote his agenda and perspective.

LACS and the rest of them are wilfully disregarding the evidence of deep biodiversity in managed moorland and countryside. If not game keepers and estate workers I simply dont know who will invest in maintaining the landscape... i dont see too many antis out clearing ditches, laying hedges etc etc etc...

I do wonder how many of the 80k have tried grouse, seen a shoot, seen a managed vs unmanaged landscape... or even considered taking food from field to plate...

they just dont like the idea... which is ignorant. I dont like the idea of veganism... i am an apex predator and an opportunistic omnivore, but each to their own.

As one of my favourite t-shirts says; I love animals.... they're delicious!!

These antis just haven't got a clue, one was on the radio this morning saying 75% of birds shot are wounded
but she woulden't say where she got the percentage from.
She was also saying people with loads of money buy a purdey and all the gear that goes with shooting pay the thousands of pounds
for the season and can't even shoot a barn door.
Again how does she know few shooters that came on the radio started an argument with her but the presenter
had to cut them off if your intrested in the program it's on the I player for an our.

4 grouse/chickens in my backyard ... No problems eating " grouse fried rice " ... I just don't shoot this close to my back door .

in Canada you don't need license or anything else to harvest game on yer own property .

        the world needs more canada

I've spent a fair amount of time in your neck of the woods - mostly in and around Edmonton... but ventured out across Jasper, Calgary, Banff, then out to Manitoba and Ontario... I agree the world needs more canada, all of the scale of the US, but with better manners and a stronger yet more modest sense of identity. Love it out there.... eh! Matt

I love a bit of grouse. The king of game birds for me. A classic grouse dinner, followed by port, cognac/ whisky and a fine Cuban cigar would be pretty much the perfect evening for me.

My view is that hunting/shooting for food is fine, so long as the animal is not wasted and just killed for fun.

Where me and my son beat for the syndicate, at the end of the day the guns take their braces the keeper asks the beaters and picker up
if they want any birds ,whats left after that go to the game dealer so realy nothing goes to waste.

That is the whole point. Some pest/ vermin control is a neccessity, but grouse, pheasant, pigeon, duck, partridge, goose... Etc. All in the pot!

Most game is presented driven here, so has some height and distance. So, most shoot 12 gauge. 20 gauge is pretty common too. I've shot walked up red grouse, snipe and woodcock with a 12 too.... Frankly they are so rapidly away that the lead in the air is helpful. I have a .410 that i shoot pigeon and vermin (mostly grey squirrels)with... Its just easier to carry with a cigar on the go!

you live in a stunning part of the world! forgive my lousy geography but is drumheller near you? Loved that landscape too...
