Wow, never expected to bump into another GbV fan here! I was supposed to be going to meet Rob Pollard at a fan convention next June but it's near my wife's due date so no can do It's one of my biggest musical regrets that I never got to see them live or meet Rob, they actually reformed earlier this year for a few dates across the US.

They are one of my top 5 bands but strangely I've got no interest in other indie bands, especially british ones. I just can't stand stuff like The Stone Roses, Oasis, The Charlatans, the Happy Mondays, there's just no intelligence to it IMO. Americans seem much better at it, with bands like The National.

        • Listening to Sheet music and The Original Soundtrack by 10cc at the moment. I always enjoyed this band but with the passage of time, I realise that weren't just good, they were superb!

Good shout, sir. Elliott Smith is one of my favourite singer/songwriters ever.

Currently I am digesting the latest Bill Frisell record, and a fair bit of Mingus Ah Um. And working my way through a pile of podcasts i've neglected to listen to over the past three months...

That's too bad. I've seen them four or five times, and mostly they were f'ing great (save for one bad show, but it could have been me). I missed the reunion tour a couple months ago due to being a crotchety old person who doesn't really go to shows anymore, but I couldn't do without GBV in my collection.

Love the National as well. I would say that though I don't listen to Brit bands you list, I have always liked Blur.

Got to agree to that, sad as his music is.

The Hold Steady are kick-ass; I like to think of them as a cross between Husker Du and Bruce Springsteen (Huskersteen, or something like that).

                      One of my favorite tracks:

Bill Frisell is great. I saw him about 10 years ago in Birmingham and about 6 years ago in Frankfurt. Just amazing... the most gorgeous feel and humour in his playing.

                        • I enjoyed that Huskersteen tune Soulmanure, thanks

I'm on a big Rush trip at the moment, they make such an amazing sound for a 3 piece. Geddy is practically playing 3 instruments at once! (vocals, bass and synth loops via pedals).

Great band, trippy at times though, like the progression is just all over the place

                            Dream Theatre, another Great Band.

Interesting, I'd level that criticism at Dream Theater much more than Rush. I used to be a massive DT fan but the biggest mistake they ever made was losing Kevin Moore. He kept them grounded and always made sure there was a focus on songwriting. Ever since then I feel that DT have focused far more on technical ability and showy musical "stunts" rather than honing their songwriting ability (with the exception of Metropolis Pt. 2 which I have to admit is awesome!). Still, Images and Words is rarely out of the car

Have you listened to Chroma Key at all, it was Kevin Moore's project after he left DT? He made 3 albums that hardly enyone heard then started to focus on producing, although I think he still performs on the OSI albums. I love CK, especially the middle album You Go Now. Very chilled out, it's one of my favourite albums to relax to.

                                Watch this from about 3.40:

He's also written a pretty good book called 'Ghostrider':

Gets kind a heavy in places!
