methinks that's not what he did as a LIVING persay but much rather as.... Just random fits of anger or drunk rages.
However, I haven't seen his movie or docu so I can't speak as well. Especially when everyone says he slanders people to near death in that film...........

but that's exactly how he made his living, he was an 'intellectual', author, journalist, speaker!! he wrote about politics, religion and the cult of personality....... slandering many people along the way in his imitable, slimy, smarmy, arrogant way....... and got paid for it!! that was his job!! he has a pervy teacher thing about him that many find appealing, i find disgusting!! i don't think he would've been a good politician because he comes across as dishonest (at least to me), for this job you have to be a little convincing...... especially to the ignorant!! sorry, i should correct myself, he does seem to have convinced the ignorant........

What a strange thing to say Alex.
You seem very passionate on the subject of Hitchens so we will have to just agree to disagree.
What are your views on Galloway just out of interest ?
        If..

i'm passionate about the truth and hate arrogance!! what's so strange about likening chrisopher hitchens to a 'pervy teacher'?

my views on george galloway? he's not without his flaws, but he's entertaining, speaks directly, is engaging to watch in his debates, doesn't hide behind rhetoric, can provide facts and evidence and can hold his own in a debate!! some things i agree with, some i don't!! simple as!! as i've said, i don't believe in 'cult of personality', to which hitchens seems to belong!! also, my views on galloways opinions etc are irrelevant (unless we're talking his global opinions, like his thoughts on iraq, iran, syria, venezuela etc), i care more about what happens in my own country (northern ireland) with my own MPs than what happens in bradford!!

so, no....... i don't 'worship' at the shrine of 'gorgeous' george galloway!! saying that, he's teetotal and enjoys cuban cigars and is always immaculately dressed!! hitchens was an alcoholic, chain smoker who looked like he had his cloths shoveled on!! lol.....

            • Also.. Has anyone else seen the irony of this specific thread's title having a typo??

Maybe it was pointed out already and just left cause it's quite humourous

What an awful and childish argument you make against Christopher Hitchens. We know your full of hot air when you have to resort to personal attacks as opposed to bringing anything of substance to the table.

                  • Just a quick break from the purpose of this thread to recognize se?or Mr. Moore as the author of what I consider to be the most useful post of all time - How to purge a cigar.

It's been a long time since you've been around these parts. Good to see you back on the boards.

                    • Thanks TJ. Its been a while but I do still stop by now and again. I just had to reply to senor robusto. He doesn't have to like what Hitchens had to say, but he must concede that he has a right to say it and in a way it doesn't matter whether you agreed with his views or not. Hitchens defended the freedom of speech. Unlike Galloways anti democratic stances on certain issues.

Methinks you're a tad detached from the original statement and argument from your extended absence..

Unless, of course, we all had closed the door when you said "agree to disagree." If so, then you decided to open a new frontier of discussion into defending him from such rash insults. (but the again, what insults? Hemmingway was a drunk. He is also the best WW writer in American history. Freud was a chainsmoker, along with Hunter S. Thompson, George Harrison, etc. I don't think I need to explain their greatnesses).
its also nicely shown that Alex insulted" Hitchen while augmenting the status of Galloway: who you asked about in Alex's opinion. Just seems the insults were a byproduct from the original argument which was still fresh in our minds when a completely new question arises, even when it has nothing to do with the new question.

I just hope the arguments won't be to the level of what they were before. Pretty sure most things have been covered in the last page or two of this thread now. I'll be damn well surprised if new information comes up or if your or Alex's hardened stand points change.

                        • Calling Hemmingway a drunk which was true by the way, is a tad different to calling Hitchens ' a pervy teacher ' which was untrue. Do you agree ?
On the whole your right Jeremy, I probably shouldn't of replied on this topic mate, but come on, look back on his ramblings and tell me if he's giving a balanced view on Hitchens and then listen to his sidewards defence of Galloway. No no no, I couldn't leave it at that. Hitchens said many times in debates that he didnt have to defend the rights of any 'one' person, but in the right for that person to have his view heard. Many of Hitchens critics went 'ad hominem' in a desperate attempt to fire a dig in. Hitchens always enjoyed this as it showed that his critics had no basis to their arguments against and relied on personal attacks to gain moral ground and thats exactly how I feel about Alex and his posts.
I wonder what the anti Hitch lobby feel about Socrates, would it of been better if Plato had kept his branch of philosophy a secret so not to offend the establishment....

                          • right....... i just stumbled upon this!! mr moore, if you had a problem with anything i wrote i would appreciate it if you contacted me directly via PM rather than carry this shitty 'debate' on!! i can't stand christopher hitchens...... get over it!! you wanted to 'agree to disagree' to end an argument, now you're starting something up again? how sad!!

i likened hitchens to a 'pervy teacher' because that's how his demeanor comes across to me!! i gave my opinion on galloway, as requested by you..... so what's the problem? this debate has been dead for some time now, get over it!!

just to make my final point, i read hitchens' work, i watched his debates, and i disagreed with a lot (actually, most) of his opinions!! my opinion is from an educated and informed point of view....... something you have difficulty 'getting'!! i don't get the 'cult of personality' that surrounds this man (if you were american, i could understand)!!

........ and another thing, more than 'his critics relying on personal attacks because their arguments had no base', many of his critics faced the common problem of debating with a drunkard!! there's another version of that old adage, 'never argue with a drunkard or a fool, they'll lower you to their standards and beat you with experience'!! as was pointed out, a lot of great writers were drunks or alcoholics....... but that doesn't make them glamourous!! alcoholism shouldn't be trivialized like this!! as for hitchens, his alcoholism was more contemptible because he was smarmy and arrogant and egocentric!!

again, rather than you bringing this shit back....... why didn't you:
                            1. leave it at 'agree to disagree', like what you requested?
                            2. if you had a problem with my point of view, contact me via PM and carry on the debate there?

                            • there was no ramblings on my behalf!! you thought you could shoot my argument down by claiming i was plundering WIKIpedia for information, when i fact i have read hitchens' material and watched his debates for years!! i am educated and informed in this argument, something i believe you are not!! if you read more carefully, not selectively, i gave opinions on both hitchens and galloway..... as you requested!! neither of whom i think greatly of!! i didn't give a sidewards defence of galloway as you suggest, but gave my opinions on both based on the debate i posted the link to, plain and simple!!

my advice to you is, spend a few years acquainting yourself with hitchens' work (like what i have done), as well as work from those he blasted, such as noam chomsky and then enter into debates like this!! this way you may learn something, good or bad, about the man!!

I dont understand what your trying to prove in your remarks about who he called out or attacked. What do you expect him to do? That was his job for gods sake.
I dont claim he was a saint and I believe he has left his mark in history. I know he is hated by a large contingent of the left but I liked him and many others around the globe did as well. I think we have digressed enough to put this one to bed.
just to answer this...... as an alcoholic who was rarely sober, what gave him the moral high ground to pass comment on all those he slandered, such as chomsky, hunter s thompson, etc etc? there's a certain irony there i think you're missing........

yes, i agree he has left 'his mark' in history, i believe as a piss stain on a university chair and a patron and casualty of johnny walker whisky and marlboro cigarettes!! he wrote a lot of books and had a lot of debates, and wrote (what was for most part) 'shock' articles about other celebrities or thinkers that he harbored a drunken grudge against!! somehow, you justify this as saying 'it was his job'...... what a great way to make a living!!
