Smacking and Caning

Not my hobby, you understand, but just wondering what your thoughts are about caning naughty kiddies, and so on.

I was regularly slippered in French lessons. I was caned four times for talking after lights out when the master in charge did his rounds. I was smacked for wearing the wrong coloured socks and cubicle gated for half a term. I was stripped and gagged and douched for smoking. And so on.

All this with an Army father, and a military boarding school education that taught me Latin and choral evensong chanting PLUS rifle stripping, marching, camouflage, night manoeuvres, shooting buck rabbits from helicopters.

Couple of problems.

I think some of the old duffers who caned me had questionable feelings for children. In fact I'm certain of it.

The other problem is that the tide has turned and nobody can raise their tone of voice, let alone their finger.

I fear we are heading down and down and down and pray to God we don't have a civil war and have to fight our way into Sainsbury's to get provisions. It will be hell.

My own opinion is that I'm shifting more towards smacking / caning as a possible solution to en masse vagabonds because no matter how much you pray for it, the ground won't open and swallow them up.

Big Society Boot Camps, maybe?

I'm all for it!

No doubt there will be abusers and that those will be the only ones we will ever hear about. However, I maintain that for every tale of overzealous caning, et. al., there will be many many fold more potential ruffians who will have learnt their lessons and become productive members of society for it. Instead, we will continue to have the momentum in favo(u)r of the unruly child who knows that he/she wields all the power and can get away with almost anything without fear of recrimination, much less punishment.

I dont think kids should be given the cain. I'd start them off on something a little milder first. May be a HdM or an El ray de Mundo perhaps

Boss your just wrong. I say cane them, some of the little bastards roaming the streets these days might think twice. I respect but don't envy teachers. Bloody hard job, especially these days. A kid stabbed a teacher near were I live, then under appeal was allowed to go back to the school in the same class, bloody amazing. Should have stripped the skin from his arse with a birch. My dad told me he was birched once, he never put a foot wrong after that

As long as parents don't go overboard with it I see no problems. Had my arse spanked when I was a kid and look back on it and I deserved to be punished every time!

On the other hand it didn't do any good. I was a bad kid and although I didn't like being spanked I was gonna be bad anyway! Being a bad kid I think makes you a wise parent. I will let u all know in a few years if my theory is correct!

Nothing wrong with the cane or even a dumbell or two. I got caned as a child for a few indiscretions at school in my time and it I think it worked and wasnt bad since.
I dont think it has had any influence in my liking for it now in any way, as none of my female teachers wore leather nazi costumes.

I teach at a college so I'm around adults all day. But last week and monday of this week I went to a high school to administer tests to these kids (17-18 year olds). And these kids have no respect for anything or anyone! The stories I heard were insane! Their teacher said one kid was held down on the ground by 4 of his classmates while another classmate took his penis and put it on the other kids lips while he was being held down! I told his teacher that I've never had a penis in my mouth before.......but if I were that kid I would have bit it off! Can you imagine how that kid must have felt?

Stories of them pissing in water fountains, branding each other...... It just went on and on. I could never work with punks like that.

And I thought my generation was rowdy!

Totally disagree with the cane and the slipper and smacking... i think kids should be flogged, keel hauled fore and aft and then some.. Public humiliation for offenders, say on a saturday football match, offenders marched into the centre at half time and humiliated in public for there crimes...

Sounds like you had a background like mine, father in the forces, i went to Cornwall school in Dortmund, Germany. The deputy head and head wore gowns and caps..

Kids were diciplined on a regular basis, i was often caned in assembly on the stage in front of the whole school.. rapped accross the knuckles with a wooden ruler edge and had many a chalk board wiper bounce off my head...

That followed by 13 years 161 days in the Army!! a route all naughty kids should take.. Now look at me haha, i am part of the legal system... great example setting..

The big problem - too many parents don't discipline in the first place, thinking that it should be part of a teacher's job, not theirs.

A case as an example... My mother, who works with a reception class, was disappointed to hear that she had the 'problem' child next year. Far worse, by all accounts, than the last problem child who they had (who was pretty bad anyway). By all accounts, this new child had attempted to bite another child's nose off in playgroup... As a result, the woman who my mother overheard commented that hopefully the school would instil some discipline. My mother, naturally, assumed that the wishful lady was the attacked boys mum. No, it was the mother of the devil himself...

On topic... I think that there should certainly be some provisions for smacking/caning. It has certainly swung too far in one direction, and the small number of vindictive teachers will find ways of ruining kids schooldays otherwise. I was smacked by my parents, it never left any lasting damage, and made me think twice before I did something wrong again.

most of my old teachers would be in prison now! I can remember in junior school the teacher threw a board rubber at my mate and knocked him out, I was caned and had the pump off our games teacher , never did me any harm

Too much of a bloody nanny state we are now. twat the lot of em, if you do some wrong you bloody well deserve it. I had cane , leather strap when i was at school and did me no harm. And as for the thieves, car crimes, burglary , i'd personally birch em in public, jail/borstal only teaches them new tricks. And don't get mme started about the benefit system, anyone getting benefit should do somework in kind, like litter picking , painting, would make the place look cleaner.

I wasn't going to post this on here as Its a chapter of my life I want to forget. My daughter was verbally assaulted by a lad all through primary school. We taught her to ignore him, this led to him beating her. My son, 2 years younger, witnessed this and gave him a good hiding. He got in trouble for this, his first ever in school. We went the correct route , first teacher, then head master, then onto board of education then legal advice. While sat in a meeting, and seeing this kids sheet or wrong doings, which was several pages long, we were told its was our daughters fault, she was an easy target and had no self esteem. We left 5 seconds later.
My wife cried all that night. I went to work the next and got a phonecall from the sister in law, could I come to the hospital. Jo had attempted to take her own life , she couldn't see our little girl punished like this anymore

So we got her home, and I went to pick the kids up. This little bastards chav of a dad decided to come and have a go on the playground. I asked him to back away, but egged on by his friends he carried on. I gave him a bloody good hiding on the playground , and told him he would get another every week until it stopped.

I wasn't proud of what happened, but it worked. She's still in therapy in high school, but is doing great, studying hard to be a doctor

Lee Nub, Very sorry to hear of your tragic story. Today's fashion seem to be to blame the victim When kids are told they can't be hit for any reason, then there is no deterent. At least we used to believe that if the teachers weren't watching us then God was, Do you remember the case of the American yob that trashed cars in Singapore & was sentence to canning; he agreed to it but the US Goverment pleaded against it, why?
Unfortunately, the real purpose of corporal punishement was to deter youngsters from the path that might mead to capital offences. Once we (ie Europe) ditched that, even for genicide, corporal punishement was seen as null & void.
