  • Films and Cigars

A few days ago I was watching an old documentary series about MGM. In the second episode the showed a clip from the 1937 film "Saratoga" with Jean Harlow and Clark Gable.

In this particular scene, Walter Pidgeon's character walks in on Jean Harlow with Clark Gable under the bed and a cigar smoking nicely on the table. To cover for her lover, Jean picks up the cigar and starts smoking it. Her response to "when did you start smoking cigars" is "Oh I just picked it up. I am trying to obey doctor's orders. He said 'no more cigarettes!'" Priceless 😂👌🏻

It got me thinking, what are your favourite cigar related movie moments?

Not necessarily a favourite moment, but I was put in mind of this; anyone spot the film?

    - I like Nick's fix on this.
    - Great
    - Hey, you wanna come by later ? l got a box of new Cubans, just came in.
    - Great.
    - Cool.
    - You smoke cigars?
    - No.
    - You know, your office is looking really snazzy.
    - l love the red.
    - Thanks.
    - Mr. Marshall, your daughter's on line one...

(Clearly Pandora disproves the assumptions being made in this!)

Mine is the scene from Blackhawk Down when the American officer is interrogating the Somalian guy.
The Somalian lights up a cigar and offers him one saying its a genuine Bolivar from Cuba.
The American who is also smoking a cigar says its Cuban as well to which the Somalian replies "Miami is not in Cuba general'
'Cigars are a hobby, cigarettes an addiction'

Not a film but I was watching The Wire last week and I love the way one of the detectives, Bunk, uses a cigar and blowing out smoke to show disapproval or disbelief of a suspect without using words, it is good writing.

Anyone know what they're lighting up in The Gentleman? There's a scene towards the beginning of the film as they're going towards the land rover, cant quite make it out.

I watched Knives Out yesterday, it was an enjoyable film and Mr Daniel Craig enjoyed a couple of cigars too!
