  • Coffee: how do you make/take yours?

As a self confessed coffeeholic, I thought I'd set up a thread where we could discuss the subject. Be interesting to see what members like (coffee origins, brew methods, roasters, etc) and what setups they have - pics would be nice!

I'll go first. I very much enjoy coffees which are roasted on the lighter end of the spectrum. In terms of origin I'm quite open minded and have had some really good coffees over the years from around the globe, including relatively new coffee growing regions such as Yunan, China. If pressed to chose a region I would opt for natural processed African coffees owing to the complexity of their fruity, floral and funky tasting notes.

In terms of brewing coffee I enjoy both filter coffee brewing methods as well as espresso. At home I have two espresso machines, one a La Pavoni manual lever espresso machine and the second a Gaggia Classic pump operated machine, both more than capable of brewing really good espresso.

For filter methods I have several brewers including a v60, origami dripper, chemex, kalita wave and an aeropress. All capable of brewing delicious cups of coffee when I prefer a longer drink.

Crucially, as any self respecting home barista will tell you, a good coffee grinder is the first bit of kit you need to brew good coffee at home. Pre ground coffee just doesn't cut it, sadly, as the coffee begins to oxidise and go stale very quickly after being ground and you therefore loose a lot of the inherent flavours of the coffee. I used to have a dedicated espresso grinder and a separate grinder for filter coffee (wilfa svart - can't recommend it enough) but managed to get hold of a 'niche' grinder last year and it basically enables one to grind fine enough for espresso right through to grinding coarse enough for other brewing methods. I also have a hand grinder for travelling and again this allows me to grind for both espresso and filter brewing - although I don't take my espresso machine with me on travels, honestly 😉

Here is a pic I took a while ago when brewing filter coffee with the origami dripper using hario style filter papers.

    Cheers ☕

Both production quality and the engaging content makes for really good viewing. He has become quite a legend for sure, particularly during the course of the pandemic where more and more people have been getting into brewing coffee at home.

Also a James Hoffman follower - daily aeropress user with strength 4/5 coffee. Still on the search to find 'that' blend

Hario hand grinder and a Hario V60. Been using both for around 7 years now. I prefer shorter and stronger coffee when I'm at a coffee shop and the V60 produces lovely coffee, but it doesn't have that strength for me anymore.

I currently get my beans from Rave Coffee but have also tried Origin Coffee which I found to be nice too. I currently get Chatswood blend from Rave Coffee as my regular, but did stick with their Fudge and Signature blends for years.

I will be investing in a proper setup later this year, but I know it will set me back a fair bit. I have not done a huge amount of research yet, but I'm lucky that my lovely lady is a proper barista with 5 years experience. So if I'm utterly useless with a proper espresso machine I can always fall back on her experience and still enjoy a good coffee

Bean filtering since around 2004 when I was working round the corner from Monmouth, Borough. I usually ask them for something not colourful or fruity or acidic. And they usually give me a Brazilian Fazenda of some sort. However I've tried some beans from Ethiopia and India. And occasionally scout around some others for fun. They used to have a Cuban coffee back around 2006! I remember that was good. But long long gone and forgotten.

But since been working from home have stopped fighting the missus who gets Union house roast from J'Sains.... I should start looking around again. I'm being lazy.

Usually prefer a darker roast. Filtered. Oily. Espressos out I've given up on. Tempted to get a half decent auto machine for home though...

Never got on with an aeropress!

So I need to start trying beans again! But will stick with the filter for now. Black of course

ooh or of course Greek! Metrios.

Sage Barista Express for me. Have also been using Rave Coffee since I got the machine about 4 or 5 months ago.

A true amateur in the coffee game, this does everything I need and makes a decent cappuccino so I don’t intend on going any further down this rabbit hole 😂

I used to enjoy the fudge blend as espresso or with milk. Apart from those you've mentioned, have you not tried any of their coffees that are single origin and/or filter roasts as opposed to blends geared more towards espresso? I remember the first bag of Ethiopian coffee I had was from Rave and I was blown away by the smell and flavour of blueberries when brewing it as filter.

2004 eh? Vetaran in the coffee game then, though I'm surprised you've stuck it out with dark oily roasts if I'm honest. Nice variety of brewing devices there too. I got gifted an ibrik, tried it a few times but then moved home and didn't have a gas hob so ended up giving it away.

Ive had a few coffees from Cuba last year which were nice - but cannot recall which roaster I got them from.

That is a decent machine - a few people I know have it and, like you it seems, they are very happy and content with the coffee they get from it and don't want to 'faff about' any more than that. Might be one for ha_banos to check out if he opts to go down the espresso route.

Just replaced my gaggia Classic after 10 years with this ECM Classika PID, and use a Eureka Mignon Grinder. Used to use aeropress and V60 at work but as I work from home now it's mainly just from the machine, and the occasional Cafetiere.
