  • Best minced pie

I assert it's the Sainsbury's short crust. Perfectly rich, pastry heavy, perfect sprinkling of sugar. Goes well with double or clotted cream.

    Discuss.

If you know of a better minced pie, bring it.

My wife and I agreed absolutely and wholeheartedly. We have tried other mince pies, often, but this is the one we will return to time and time again.

Too many piss poor mince pies out there tbh

Agree they are one of the best mainstream ones, ideal cigar pairing?

Good tip ha_banos I had some from Morrisons that are sold in 4 packs presented as if they’re baked in store (just like the ones pictured), they were good but I haven’t done a side by side taste off against others. There are some bougie coffee shops that probably have a good offering.

My mums were the best of course 😁. She used to do shortcrust and puff ones, think I preferred the puff

What sparked this is we went to the Christmas fayre at Burghley house. There was a stall selling mince pies. They looked good. But weren't great. Pastry was thin and soft. Filling just didn't have the oomph. There was a small pie in the afternoon tea too. Nicer but no comparison.

Also had one yesterday from local bakery. Sorry, no bueno. Greggs are pretty decent.

Must admit I've never had a cigar during or right after a mince pie!

Apparently the equivalent of 17,000 wheelie bins full of mince pies are thrown away uneaten every year. Good Food's top pie was the miniature brown butter pastry and cognac pie from Waitrose as confirmed by MLW. I hate the bloody things!

Never really had them unless at a friend's party as the Mrs doesn't like them. Some interesting suggestions that I'll have to test myself, you know... for science

I just tried the Aldi specially selected mince pie and it was very good.

Will have to try the Sainsbury's ones. Could trade you ha_banos ?

Plain cream though. None of this brandy cream nonsense.

I would say my homemade ones are the best I've had.
My favourite dessert, unbeatable with a nice homemade vanilla ice cream and some brandy butter.
I make them all year round.
Paul Hollywood's pastry recipe is very good, but his filling adds apple, I prefer deep filled with a good rich boozy mincemeat.
Paul's deep, crumbly mince pies are delicious. The secret to this mince pie recipe is to jazz up shop-bought mincemeat with a little extra fruit and zest.

A finest/deluxe etc brandy mincemeat works for me, deep filled and a mix of demarrera and plain sugar on top.
M&S used to do some cracking puff pastry ones cooked from Frozen but haven't seen those in 20 yrs.
