. Not many people know this.
Sorry, couldn't resist that one. Fresh urine doesn't smell of ammonia so Marc is right there, think I can safely say I have handled more piss bottles than anyone else on this site & did my time as 'Sluice Room Tech the RN. In a healthy person urine when it leaves the kidney must be 'sterile' but can pick up bacteria in the bladder but most likely in the urethra. When you have taken a few hundred scrapping of the inside the meatus of weeping sailors, then you know this is not a clean area. They had stopped using the old umbrella treatment by the time I got to do this but a plastic probe with a ring at the end is used to collect lining cells & pus ect. Smeared onto a slide & suitably stained, you'd be surprised, just how much gram neg & pos bacterial you can find. Gram neg diploccoci being a fav of mine, quick & simple one dose treatment. You still have a discharge but no legally identifiable STC. Professionals will be back on the game within 12hrs!
