Different vitolas give you different flavour. I spoke to the blender who made the Dalay Affentanz (last month's cigar of the month), which comes in two different wrappers. One of them is half an inch shorter than the other. When I asked him why that is, I was surprised that he told me they tried various lengths and the brighter wrapper simply tasted better when the cigar was half an inch shorter.
I guess we'll never know, but when you try different sizes of cigars, you can definitely taste differences. I bought a few boxes of the Melanio series at an airport. First I had tried two churchills and I loved them. On my way back they only had the double figuardos available, so I bought them. I never liked them anywhere as much as I did the Churchill. Wouldn't buy them again, but would snap some up instantly if i could get a good deal on the larger sizes.

The 17 is a large RG that I?m not sure is found in the standard line and a blend only used in this release that?s been aged before rolling. In terms of how different they are, I can?t tell you as I?ve not had them recently but the wrapper on the 17 is definitely darker than the regular Melanio line (but doesn?t say Maduro like the Melanio Maduro does).Originally posted by simwells View PostAnyone know how the limited editions (2017 & 2018) of the Oliva?s compare other than not being box pressed I?m struggling to find much information on how they are to smoke compared to the standards

I?ve got one last Serie V Melanio Torpedo which is about 4 years old now but I can?t bring myself to smoke it. I do however have a few Serie V Melanio Edicion Limitada 2017 which is a Double Toro (60RG) so pretty girthy. Lovely smoke though. As it?s not regular production you may struggle to find a box if you fell in love with them though...Originally posted by simwells View PostInteresting, anyone got any of the other Oliva V's outside of the Double Robusto and Lancero they'd spare so I can do a bit of a comparison?

There are a few cigars where I have same marque, but in different sizes, and they do indeed both smoke and taste different - the underlying dna is certainly there, but to my mind the flavour transitions and finish can be so very very different. The style/size that quite often appears to be the winner for me, in that my palate appreciates the subtlety, is a Lancero style - I think this comes about as you are in part, coerced into smoking them much more slowly.
In my few years back to smoking cigars on a regular basis, I have found the cigars I love the most, I smoke them much slower

So I think I worked it out, and it's always the same ratio of volume = twice wrapper area but I don't know what that means - hard to compare area to volume.Originally posted by PeeJay View PostOne of the biggest contributors to taste is the wrapper so the size of a cigar affects the ration of wrapper to filler which will affect the flavour even with the same blend.

Is that just the gauage that will effect the ratio or is there more to it too? I can't say I've ever tried any particularly similar but different formats so it's interesting to hear.Originally posted by PeeJay View PostOne of the biggest contributors to taste is the wrapper so the size of a cigar affects the ration of wrapper to filler which will affect the flavour even with the same blend.
Would you expect any difference in taste between their Double Robusto (5" x 54) and Belicoso (5" for 54) for instance? Or would it just be preference to smoke from an ergonomics point of view?
