Church wardens might be the future...of the past. They certainly add something to the contemplation.

Also that's a very distinguished looking tin of tobacco.

Today I have smoked another half a bowl of Askwith kake to season my church warden, and also started breaking in my Mr. Brog No. 18 Little Horn. It was not expensive, but it smokes sweetly for a ten or fifteen minute puff. Photos when I find them!

Common sense is not a gift, it's a punishment as you have to deal with everyone who doesn't have it!

they have some really nice pipes on their site. I've been having a look into buying one of their devil anse pipes to add to the collection, but I think I'll need to make a couple of pipe racks before then

Yes, Georgeous and it's on a bucket list, along with many others, including the wine barrel!

                  • More breaking in of the church warden. Half a bowl of askwith kake. MLW approves and looks like I may have to keep this pipe locked up!

Thank you Rupert, it is a delightful pipe, sadly the maker passed away a couple of years ago, the Italians do make pipes exceptionally well

I heartily concur with my good colleague, fine looking indeed.

If I may ask as a relative newcomer pipe smoking, do you find the little soft stem ends (softies or squidgies or some such) helpful, or in anyway messing with flavour? I've never tried using one but I have a, perhaps irrational, feeling that they would impart a rubbery taste...

Course you may ask the question, I use them on all my pipes, first thing I do actually is place one on a new pipe. It feels far better in the mouth to have a softie on imo, as it gives a bit on the teeth when you bite and It saves the stem from unsightly teeth marks after all once you start a decent pipe collection they aren't cheap.

Thanking you. I think for some of my nicer "non-gardening" pipes, softies are a good idea.

                              • Corn cob with Century Danish Black Cherry Cavendish. Was a touch too moist so I left it a while. Second go it had dried a bit and was much better, a pall of smoke and a lovely dark cherry flavour. The aftertaste is subtle but obvious, like I'd had cherry jam on my toast this morning.

P.S. It occurs to me to note that the cherry taste was dark, and not a cloying glac?, and the tobacco has left a pleasant "how a good pub used to smell" room (and beard) note
