I bought a pipe starter kit with a selection of tobaccos a good few years ago. The overall experience was a burning sensation in my mouth, pipe gargled and everything tasted harsh. Thinking back I think the tobacco was far too wet, I was smoking too fast and packing too lightly.

Ah I see now. It’s a shame there isn’t a sticky post in the pipes section for new pipe smokers. I did post something a while ago, about the 3 fill method for filling a pipe to make sure it wasn’t overfilled/overpacked - which seems to be a common problem for new pipe smokers

In my opinion you have to be patient with the pipe in order to find out what works best for you in relation to technique, taste etc. because as individuals we’re all so different with regards to our likes & dislikes. I’ve been smoking a pipe for four and a half years now and consider myself a newbie as I’m still learning all the time. All I can say is that it’s definitely worth the perseverance when you start hitting those sweet points and getting things right, plus I find it’s because there’s so much to learn that makes the journey so interesting. Best of luck and I hope that your experience this time round is a better one for you.
