  • should i or shouldn't i?

    hey all,
i was discussing with the father in law and week or two ago (over a bottle of tyrconnell irish whiskey and RYJ wide churchills) the recent interest on here in pipe smoking!!! he was a pipe smoker himself when younger and thus has a collection of antique pipes!!! well, after a few drinks, he gave me one of his old peterson pipes to try out!!! so far i haven't been tempted yet, but curiosity is getting the better of me...... i reckon i'll maybe buy a tin of tobacco tomorrow just to try it out in the next few days!!! any recommendations? i was thinking about peterson's de luxe or connoisseurs choice.......

31 years old and smoking a pipe!!! i would never have thought it, lol........

      THe Bold and the Brave!

Haha! This reminds me of a story about one of mis amigos who went back to college at your age in the 1980's and decided to pick up the pipe and give it a go. Apparently, he had seen one too many "Father Knows Best" episodes from the '50s and like senor boner, thought it would make him look distinguished on campus, along with his tweed blazer with leather elbow patches.

Well it wasn't long before he found himself sitting in the back of the cafeteria (smoking inside was allowed then) along with his pipe and a few other pipe-smoking nerds, while the hip dudes got the girls!

Personally, I stated out with a pipe back in the day and still enjoy a bowl every now and then.

Names Perro el Perro, and pipe-smoking is not for everyone.

As a pipe smoker of almost 50 years, I can say... go for it.

Those Peterson bent pipes are very good quality pipes. I used to have one of those once upon a time. The design is supposed to catch any liquids down at the bottom of the bend, but I found that it smoked "wet" and gurgled after a while. Hint: try to smoke it dry and avoid moisture from your mouth entering the mouthpiece.

The lighter coloured tobaccos such as the Peterson Deluxe tend to smoke a bit on the hot side, and you will feel it bite your tonge a bit. (General rule: light mild tobacco burns hot, darker tobacco burns more slowly and cooler). I would recommend something such as St. Bruno to start with, but that's as dark as you want to go. St. Bruno is a dark tobacco, smooth and with a good aroma, and cool burning. A pipe full of that will last well over an hour. Be prepared to "smoke matches" for a little while until you get used to packing the pipe just right. Smoke it indoors and not out in the wind. (There's a knack to doing it outdoors).

            Enjoy it... and relax.

            Cheers
            Rod

cheers for the advice rod........ the father in law said he used to smoke a blended mix of condor and mellow golden virginia (i think that's what he said)!!! however, st bruno gets a lot of praise, so i'll probably give that a go!!!

heading off in the motor home at the weekend, so i hope to have everything sorted by then!!! don't reckon i'll be bringing any cigars, read somewhere that quarter filled bowls should last around 15mins!!! that sounds good to me!!!

                  cheers,

gonna nip into belfast this morning for my supplies!!! looks like the bowl is 'caked' pretty thick, so i'll see if i can pick up a cheap reamer and pipe tool!!! need pipe cleaners and i've read that vodka is okay to use as a cleaning agent (inside the stem and bowl) as it leaves no taste!!! what'cha reckon, either a mini smirnoff or maybe mini whiskey?

                    cheers,

As a new pipe smoker beware of the Condor on its own. Its an acquired taste (which I never did). Heavy, sickly and very pungent. I can see why your father in law mixed it with a lighter tobacco though. One of my favourites is a 50/50 mix of St. Bruno and Borkum Riff. Now that is surweeet! The best of a lot of worlds.

Yes, get some of the cake off. But don't take it all off. With a briar, its good to have a carbon coating in there, otherwise it will be like breaking in a new pipe from scratch.
I never did think of using a spirit with a pipe cleaner. But you never know.

Let us know how you get on.

                        Cheers

I have been wanting to try pipe smoking for a good while now. ?(my grandfather's inspiration) But somehow, beeing seen walking around with a pipe might destroy my wicked cool street cred. Got me ?

But seriously, apparently the Dunhill blends are delicious
