Good choice of pipe - I've heard Stanwells are meant to be pretty decent, although haven't found out for myself!
I guess it's a bit late to suggest a first pipe for you, but I'd certainly recommend a Peterson as a good starter pipe. In my opinion at least, they're good value for money, widely available and smoke well, so you could do a lot worse! In fact, my first 2 pipes were Petersons.
Would be interesting to hear how you get on - takes a bit of perseverance to get used to smoking a pipe, but worth the effort...

See I knew you would all agree on what to get. I thought about going into look at them in the shops but as I dont believe there is any shops close to me with a decent selection I have just bit the bullet and ordered one more to do with the look of it than anything.

stuck on a tin of dunhill early morning and erinmore flake as well, along with a cheap tamper and some filters. Will report back after it arrives.

Peterson's are a good pipe but the P-lip on the stem doesn't suit some people, nor does the system always. If your determined to buy new, I'd go for a Savinelli, Stanwell or Nording.

Peterson nutty cut is the place to start. Its a great tobacco with a good casing.

can't agree more! go into your local tobacconist and handle each pipe that appeals to you! you'll find one that fits you right!Originally posted by Eddie View PostDon't mail order. Go to a shop with a good selection and pick your pipe. They are too personal to buy blind.

also, check out their tobacco range, great quality for a tenner a 50g tin! my favs are the luxury blend, connoisseurs choice and old dublin! tbh, they're the only pipe tobaccos i've tried.....and they worked for me!

i was lucky enough to have been gifted my father in law's antique peterson briar! he's a huge collection of pipes that he never uses anymore! when i have some spare cash i intend to buy a brand new peterson writer's pipe (the w b yeats model to be precise)!!

an 'entry level' peterson is around ?30! this is well worth it because you'll get the best experience because of the 'system' in peterson pipes, as opposed to a cheap pipe that will 'bite' you or go bitter on you due to the heat!

I got a Missourri Meerschaum corncob pipe from eBay that I've not felt the need to upgrade yet. About six or seven quid iirc?

I was given a briar which was part of a starter pack from Gauntleys. A good starting point lol but I have no idea about brands.
I really enjoy smoking a pipe, such a variety of tobacco. You will enjoy it I'm sure.

Get on ebay, buy a cheap 'estate' pipe (ie. pre-owned) that's been refurbished and see how you get on.

I started out with a Peterson Kinsale, I would recommend starting off with one of the lower end pipe as if you dont like it you've not waisted lots e.g dont get a dunhill, Gold or silver peterson etc
