I managed to track down 2 tobacconists, well, one tobacconist and one independent wine/alcohol shop that I thought may have had some nice pipe tobacco in (or even cubans for that matter). The wine shop had rolling baccy and hamlet and cafe cremes lol the tobacconist listed on Hunter and Frankau's site had no pipe baccy and a varied selection of guantanamera and 2 x number 3 RyJ and 1x number 2 RyJ. I almost treated myself to a no2 at ?15 when I realised I wouldn't be having a pipe that night, but decided to check the prices online and use the shop for future purchases if well priced (for the RyJ's only). Needless to say I will probably not be buying from there any time soon

Anyway, back to the pipe, I am hoping that the delivery turns up today, it is doing my head in waiting for this baccy, I am almost salivating at the idea of these tobaccos (I ordered some flavoured stuff, but can't remember exactly which ones). I hope I enjoy the experience and tastes as I am well up for pipe smoking.

Excellent info regarding carbonising the bowl, I had only seen a shorter method, but I think it stands to reason the longer process of 1/3 bowls would be a better option, especially for the better briar pipes out there, BUT if you got sick and tired of it and just filled it but smoked gently I think that definitely appeals.

Brilliant stuff about cleaning too, all this is absolutely brand new to me, my first introduction to pipe smoking was when my grandad used to go to the shops on a saturday morning and leave me at his house whereupon I would sneak a quick burn using mashed up cigarette tobacco... not the best experience in the world but helped with a growing nicotine addiction at a young age

I have just had my dreams of snagging an awesome sherlock type pipe for ?30 when I realised it was out of stock... not surprised at that price lol

I will take a look at that rattrays, i am really starting to appreciate the bent style pipes.

Flavoured tobaccos smell good (some like fruity candy), but don't be fooled by the good smells. They often smoke wet and harsh, and leave a flavour residue (called ghosting) which may affect future smokes, depending on the blend. Remember that moist tobacco plus fire equals super hot vapour, so let your aromatic dry out a little before trying. Do a before and after (wet vrs dry) to experience the difference yourself. Smoke slow too, to avoid tounge bite, the bane of pipe smoking!

Once you get your first briar, you may not want to smoke aromatics in it. Save 'em for the cob. Saying all that, experiment away and find out what works for you and what doesn't, just like cigars.

Now that is something I wish I had known before, i tried an alsbo cherry and it was horrendous, really bitter and crappy, I will dry them out a bit before smoking more. Conversely, the syrian latakia absolutely stunk, i mean it almost knocked me sick, but upon smoking it I was shocked by the flavour, reminded me of cubans actually for some really, really complex and lovely and I have just finished a bowl of rum flake which was incredibly light and mild, a nice gentle smoke.

The SG Chocolate flake is a decent tobacco. Yeah, a lot of pipe smokers love latakia and balkan blends, but for many it is an acquired taste. After trying your aromatics, maybe order some samples of straight Virginia blends, like Samuel Gawith full Virginia flake or Best Brown. Rattrays Brown Clunee, Marlin Flake and Hal'O the Wynd are excellent starting places. These are real natural tobacco smokes without flavours or toppings. Would you want your finest cigars tasting like rum or coconut? We love our cigars for the natural tobacco flavour, same goes for pipe tobaccos. Only my opinion...(but yeah, I guess I'm a snob about what I put in my pipe )

Totally agree with Larryson on the straight Virginia blends. I think they're gorgeous.

Excellent advice given I have found your comments regarding the flavoured stuff to be spot on. I have to admit I have not treated my exploration of pipe smoking with the same respect as cubans and thus had no psychological barrier whatsoever to heading straight for the flavoured guff lol That will change now though given my tastings thus far and will move onto the straight tobacco blends with no adulteration next.

Regarding flake, so far it has been a very pleasant, albeit mild smoke, and I have really enjoyed the flakes tried so far. Is it characteristic of flake tobacco that it is a more mellow smoke, or is it just the varieties i have thus far tried? I don't know if it makes a difference but for full disclosure, I don't rub it, but instead fold and roll it into the bowl.

Some flakes are harsh and nasty, others smooth and mild. Just like cigars, some you will love, others you will hate. How a tobacco is processed, cut and aged will certainly make differences in smoking characteristics.

You can learn about the history of flakes (and lots of other interesting facts on pipe tobacco / history) here:

Flake is definitely the way forward with tobaccos, they burn cooler and longer and so taste sweeter... that is, so long as it goes into the pipe as flake, not rubbed out. When rubbed out thoroughly, it burns quicker and hotter, burns the sugars and causes tongue bite.
Can fully recommend with probably full support from the pipe smoking fraternity Samuel Gawith Best Brown - it's marvellous stuff.

Thank you very much for that link, I have smoked tobacco products (and used nicotine via e-cigs) for around 30 years and i have never known anything about tobacco... other than in comparison to cigars and pipes, cigarettes and roll ups are absolute garbage and OI am embarrassed to have spent my life around them without further exploration.

Well so far every flake i have tried I have thoroughly enjoyed, I will say my next tobacco purchase will be Sam Gawith Best brown, I even enjoy the practice of folding and rolling the flake into the bowl...seems easier than the 3 stage pack etc I think flake is the way forward for me.

Thank you so much for your advice, tips and patience with the obvious questions.

                    Appreciate the assistance guys.

Nothing is better than a great, old, comfortable smoking jacket with all the right tools in all the right pockets.
