As most of you know I'm new to cigar smoking. How many cigar smokers smoke pipes too? How do they differ from cigars? Have thought about also having the odd pipe too as well as my odd cigar.
Pipe tobacco is generally less powerful in taste and smell. There are pipe tobaccos which are harsh - generally the aromatics have a tendency to be harsh due to the sugars burning.
Will buy a pipe and some bakky I think. I need to buy them from cgars as I have an order with them already and can combine the postage. Can anyone recommend a cheap pipe, some nice tobacco and what else do I need?
I've just had a brief look at the pipes on cgars and there are fabulous makes and styles there. Personally, I'd avoid the pipes listed as 'budget pipes' unless you can inspect it. The accuracy with which the stem holes intersects the bowl is important to avoid excessive gurgling. Though saying that, I once paid good money for a pipe with this problem and don't smoke it for that reason. In terms of tobacco, I'd recommend I straight forward Virginia by Samuel Gawith or Dunhill. This will give you a taste of the base tobacco which you can assess to determine whether you want it sweeter, less sweet, rounder, spicier, exotic etc. Other tobaccos like Latakia, Perique, Turkish etc tobaccos are added to blends to alter the taste. Some are wonderful, some are not.
Perhaps a perusal through the pipe forum would help you select a good tobacco.
Have had a tin of Early Morning and enjoyed it. It is a Virginia based tobacco blended with Latakia and Turkish tobacco. Provides a full flavoured and robust taste. The Latakia gives a bottom end heaviness and the Turkish a top end fruitiness. Sweetness from the Virginia gives the solid middle taste, all providing a full spectrum of tastes.
As VTG has pointed out, be prepared for some frustrations until you get the hang of packing, lighting, tamping etc. Gentleness and fastidiousness is certainly a virtue to be harnessed by any pipe smoker.
Regularly tempted by this whole pipe smoking malarkey but always manage to hold off as feels too close too smoking. Sure I will cave one day, in the words of Oscar Wilde I can resist anything except temptation.....
