I have a few pipes from two of my grandfathers.... Well one was a great grandfather. They are in bad shape but one day I will fix them up.

My Mrs' mum has her dads pipe wich is very nice.

Now that's something you don't see very often a woman smoking a pipe , no sexual pun intended

She dosent smoke it anymore, she gave up all forms of smoking a while ago just so she can 100% stay off the fags. It's a precious keepsake for her now.

Ok, so had another go on the pipe this morning!

First: I tried the rolling it around in the palm of my hand method, loaded it great but kept going out.

Second: tried the baby, lady, man process again, but this time did not pack so tightly, Burnt lots better, lots more oxygen, huge reduction in bitterness (maybe because of the reduction in heat) but still had to re light a few times.

Going to stick with it until I get it just right.

On average, how many times do pipe smokers have to re light?

I?m in Nottingham and I believe there is a local pipe club, I might get in touch with them to see where there next meet is!

                  Thanks.

I've never found an average number but certainly two or three is good going for me. Yes Notts has a pipe club I'd try gauntleys for info on it.

Amount of relights depends on the tobacco. Some of it, like Samuel Gawith 1792, is virtually impossible to keep lit... that's if you can get the stuff going in the first instance.
Sometimes tobaccos are too moist and contribute to the amount of relights. If it clumps together when pinched between the fingers it is too moist and benefits from spreading out on kitchen paper for half-an-hour.
In general I may have to relight half a dozen times if I fail to tamp it frequently enough. You will soon get to know when it's about to go out, and a few gentle short puffs combined with a tamp generally gets it going again. Puff too hard and it'll go out.

Thats my only reason why i stopped buying gawiths tobacco very very moist.

You're correct. The Nottingham pipe club is very popular. I think they have a Facebook group. There is a link on the GQ tobacco website. Might be worth going to get some tips!
