  • Monthly Pipe Club

I'm making this thread for expressions of interest in a monthly tasting club and ideas on how it could work.

My initial thought was that we could perhaps do a flavour journey/exploration... E.g we get a couple blends a month of a certain archetype and reflect on our thoughts.

We could start with Virginia and work our way through Burley, Cavendish/Aromatics, Perique, Latakia, Oriental/Turkish and Dark Fired Kentucky, with the end result hopefuly being that we finish up having a better understanding of the flavours/characteristics of each type of tobacco and their roles in a blend.

For example the first month could be something like Sam Gawith FVF and Orlik Golden Sliced.

Im really not sure of the best way to work this? We come up with what we're getting then source it ourselves? We decide what we want and then buy in bulk to try and get it at a discount?

    Thoughts ideas?

Yeah, I don't think there's a rush for this one.

Given the numbers, or even the lack of, how about simply buying a tin/pack or so and divvying up? 50g for example between a few interested parties could go a fair way and the expense is then limited to a share of the outlay, plus postage?

I think in principle it's a great idea as my stable is limited and I've steered away from certain strains of tobacco based on initial whiffs and reviews I've read. Over the long run, I imagine I won't get turned onto loads and loads, but this idea is a bit of fun and who knows what we'll find/source.

Good idea VTG , been contemplating how this would work as I'm sure you have , numbers is the key and I feel there is only a few of us , a suggestion I have is one of us hosts each month and posts a sample bag to each member , the good part is pipe tobacco being far cheaper than cigars even a 100g tin being the cost of say two cigars . And postage shouldn't be an issue either .
Lets make a list of who's interested and take it from their .

And we could possibly have a blind taster element to this. I wouldn't have a clue about what the vast (and I mean vast) majority of pipe tobaccos were when smoking them, but again the fun factor is the attractant

              Morning guys.
I like the idea of this but for me I'd prefer not to blind taste. I'm relatively new to pipes still so it would enable me to find exactly where my tastes lye. Part of the enjoyment for me is comparing notes with reviews ,often as I smoke to see if I can taste what they did.

Do we set a price ceiling on this or just assume that being pipe tobacco it will stay reasonable anyway?

100g tins range around ?20 ish mark depending how many are in should be ample and the host will obviously be able to gain the lions share , that is obviously dependant on numbers .

See how the numbers go as 50g might do it ay? 100g is often touching ?25(2x 50g tins) at my local B&M. Personally, I'd rather go lower than higher please. Of course, if interest swells tobacco doesn't (if you get me)

Yeah fine I'd say a 10g taster sample to each is good so depends on the numbers , and its down to each monthly host how much he buys , so if say they're are six of us you would only host once every six months .

I'd have to guesstimate amounts as I've no scales, unless someone can come up with a cunning self made device or method? I bet Marc has made some scales in the past
