    Nooooooooooo...!

Don't let yourselves be turned to the 'dark side'.

I know how seductive these 'pipes' can be.. in your head you're thinking, 'Hey, these are pretty nice.. and I look sharp..!'
    (See pic 1)
But in reality.. it's a look that only Gandalf can pull off.

It's not too late.. (save yourself from temptation..!).

Thanks for the advice joe and do I need to put anything in with it, like you do with Boveda packs etc. for cigars?

Also, what's the most preferable type of container?

Is the tin it comes in not adequate enough?

That's right sham there are more pipe tobacco's than you can imagine
especialy the loose tobacco weighed out by the ounce
            flakes
            plugs
            cut plugs
mixtures of every description vanilla,,cherry.. honey.. coffee ..fudge
            twists
then you have the tin tobacco's to choose from as well as the packet ones.
Look up gawith hoggarths website just to give you an idea
as well as Samuel gawiths website the choice is huge.

A lot depends on the pipe. Many, if not most, of the better factory pipes don't really require breaking in (a Savinelli or Peterson, for example).
If it's raw briar inside (a cheaper pipe, or a fancy handmade pipe), then start with 1/3 to 1/2 bowl for the first few times you smoke it. Don't let it get too hot, and let it dry out well before each time you do smoke it (say, for 24 hours) and you should be fine. You'll be slowly building up a cake.
I see those recommendation to do all sorts of things to break in a pipe on the Internet (using honey is a common one), but I've never done any of them in my life other than be kind and gentle to a new pipe until it's "conditioned" a little

Thanks Tony, in that case I think I'll just start with 1/2 bowl for a few times and go from there[emoji106][emoji2]

Try and smoke the whole bowl down to ash as well . One good thing with a pipe is you can put it down and come back to hours later. I've been smoking the same bowl since 12.30 today had three stints and only just got to half a bowl . Just very lightly tamp the top relight and away you go

Thanks for the pointer and I will do.
Being able to put it down and pick it up over a long period sounds as though it can be very convenient at times.

Common sense is not a gift, it's a punishment as you have to deal with everyone who doesn't have it!
