I use this and thin it down with a little methylated spirit. I only use a little at a time and keep the diluted dye in a jar for later

Thanks for the positive feedback guys. I decided to stick with the poker shape for the moment, in order for me to get some much needed practice I am using some less expensive woods, the first being maple. Not entirely happy with the result as it seems to char very easily.

I also fixed the first kit I done as I made a few mistakes with it:
                    Before

                    After

Fruit woods should be better IMO and theres also Box wood which along with Cherry are probably the two most common pipe woods after Briar.

I could probably muster up a bit of Cherry and/or Walnut if needed.

At the moment I am obviously a novice in this fine art, but as soon as I am a bit more proficient I will probably consider selling some of these pipes.
I am using some pearwood for my next pipe another poker, (I'll be making a few of this shape before moving on to other shapes.) I also have some cherry wood that I will be making pipes from and I intend buying some olive wood too with the intention of making pipes.
The briar pokers are kits that I bought on ebay for around ?25, I think I might keep these for sentimental reasons, but everything else I would consider selling as long as it's good enough.

I made a couple of mistakes on this pear wood piece, but decided to carry on with it. I drilled the chamber too deep by 2-3 mm as well as the draw hole not being straight. It looks not bad, but I don't know if it will smoke well.
