i would recommend a mr brog pipe from our sponsors, they are cheap and smoke really well imo. the 12 quid one i bought is great and still going strong in my rotation. Tobacco wise i bought a mystery sampler again from cgars. Came in a nice leather pouch and it turned out to be kendal dark, a nice rich tobacco..I tend to smoke aromatics now mainly because its a nice change of direction every now and again from cigars, but i do love the peterson nightcap with a whisky, kendal dark and peterson tripple p!

I dont mind bombing you some aromatic if you like. i can do you a nice couple of bowl to give you a taste.....

I'd say it's worth the small outlay. I probably spent £30-£40 on the lot but could have been less if I only went with the Corn Cob. I've still got all my bits as there is always the option to pick it up again whenever!
In fact I will make it a little project to try the pipes again before the year is out

Thanks; that's very interesting. I had heard about corn cob pipes being a good starting place, but I hadn't thought about the sampler packs, and the briar starter kit sounds useful. I suspect I may revert to cigars too, but I'm inclined to give it a try.

With apologies to mrnutt for hijacking (reviving?) this old thread, but seemed an obvious one to borrow to ask a question of you pipe types on 'the other side' of the forum. Perhaps it's putting the clocks back, but I'm thinking again of taking up a pipe for the first time. Simple request: quick recommendation on what pipe and what tobacco for my first foray...

on the actual point of the post, I did eventually get some pipes and tobacco...

I picked up a corncob pipe as these come highly recommended for starting out in pipes, I also picked up a molina briar starter kit. In terms of tobacco I ordered some sampler packs online from a few places, both aromatics and non aromatics. I also popped down to Ajay's in Teddington (my local shop) and also picked up some smaller bags to sample a few of his offerings and went along those lines.

I must say after my brief foray into pipes I did go back to cigars but have been thinking more about pipes again recently and get back into them.

I used to smoke cigars albeit cheaper ones, when walking the dog. I'd much rather a pipe now.
Cigars need full attention whereas a pipe can be smoked however you like and at what pace and style is called for at the time.

Not sure what all these aromatic sweet tobacco are doing for my palate though..

I got me a pipe a few years ago and have enjoyed various samplers since but on the whole can't be bothered so much with the faff and enjoy cubans too much

I agree [MENTION=13485103]Cloudy[/MENTION]. With these darker days and especially over winter - I sometimes just want 15 minute smoke - of quiet contemplation. The plus being I?m not dipping into my cigar stash, which when smoking for me is always a sense of occasion and demands more of your attention than a pipe.

A pipe always lifts my spirits. Nice and quiet contemplation time with a favourite tobacco that can be enjoyed in 15mins.
?3.50 on a corn cob pipe and ?7 on a pack of St.Bruno flake or Samuel Gawith Squadron Leader is ?10 well spent for any beginner , that's just my lowly opinion of course.

glad to see others getting back into pipes, I was hoping to really get into pipes this year but with my marriage seemingly over (wife decided she wants to separate) pipes have taken a back seat but as I'll be moving into my own place soon i'm going to make the time for some pipes!
