My personal recommendation is this:

Its a great all rounder using top quality tobacco. Here is the description taken from the net: Ashton Rainy Day Pipe Tobacco is a savoury blend of Virginia and Burley leaf with velvet Black Cavendish. Aged in whisky barrels for precisely one month, this mixture smokes smooth and heralds a marvelous aroma of tropical fruit and hickory nuts.

Sorry just seen this, i havent tried 965, but i wouldnt say EMP is close to the monty flavor profile. there isnt a comparison really, well not for me. But its all good stuff.

I have now tried both, 965 and EMP...965 is far better! EMP is good too though

What brand briar pipes are the best in your opinion?

Depends on price, id stay away from all new peterson, they have varying quality issues all over Facebook. You can get some decent bargains on eBay searching for "estate pipes" find a few that are refurbished and they're good for smoking from the off.

If you're buying new, im a sucker for a Savinelli.

Thats a bold statement, i felt the same for a short period. I love my pipes but cigars feel special and are a nice treat . I treat my pipe as an 'in between' and if i fancy a smoke but dont have much time, i can pack half a bowl. And like i said before if i do get called on or distracted mid smoke i dont feel bad about coming back to it later and lighting up again or just knocking the bowl out.

I like mainly Montecristo cigars...would you say My Mixture 965 is closer to Monty's than the Early Morning Pipe (if you've tried it)?

Had my first bowl of pipe tobacco in a MM Corn Cob (Country Gentleman pipe) with some My Mixture 965 tobacco. I may have been instantly converted....

Its one of the better ones for sure. Corn cobs are my favourite pipes, always a good talking point

there is so many to choose from its crazy. the aros are good. i enjoy an aro as its different to a cigar, a nice change of pace.so dont discount them just sample a few different ones and the majority aren't that heavily laced.

Something to tamp down the tobacco as you smoke.... it's quite an art as I'm finding out!
