mr chimp, we got off on a wrong foot, minor disagreement on something not totally important!myou're obviously passionate about your coffee, that's great! i do hope mr cigar takes the time to try out your recommendations, as well as mine! there's no definitive viewpoint here, it's all subjective! fair enough?

now, i'm gonna give this new coffee my father in law swears by...... red mountain i think it's called! lol

      all the best,

Haha. I thought I was going to have to invoke the, "My dad's bigger than your dad" argument for a minute there.

      All the best.

As if full circle i have just landed in Italy and had a 'cafe' (espreso for those of you not familiar with the way here). Short Illy shot with sugar and a glass of cold water. Not something i drink at home but everything has its place

all these coffees are easily available in supermarkets for around ?3.50 a bag! much better than illy's or lavazza, though they're still great coffees!

                      This is stuff isn't it?
Nice coffee. It has an acidity to it, which suits the morning (as does the high caffeine content). I don't think it's as complex a flavour as Illy or Lavazza. Perhaps the darker roast is something to get used to, which obscures some of the more subtle mid flavours.

On the Taylors you might want to try the Italian Roast, a bit more rounded.

Picked up a moka pot and a bag of Taylor's rich Italian yesterday and am enjoying it a lot.

Got a 9 cup pot, is it OK to use less coffee and water to brew a smaller quantity of coffee? Or does it always need to be full of both?

I think ideal is close to full on both, hence lots of different sizes of moka pots ....but I have minimal experience on moka pots so not really sure.

Hmm, probably should have got a slightly smaller one then or I'm going to spend a fortune in coffee

My moka pot is a 3-cup size. I fill the coffee strainer to the max and shake it down before topping off with more coffee. Also, I put boiling water in the water chamber, which speeds the whole process up enormously. I find that the water to coffee ratio is just right because the very last part of the expressed coffee runs the colour of weak tea.
Are you making 9 shots of coffee at full strength, or are you only partly filling the coffee strainer and partly filling the water chamber to regulate the amount of coffee you make. Either you will be totally sparked up with a caffeine overdose or pouring a lot of coffee away, which is costly.
I mentioned the colour of the ladt part of the coffee from my moka pot because this might provide a guide to how much coffee to water you use in your 9-cup pot as opposed to buying another.
